As a few (none) of you know, when I'm not wasting time posting and erasing my posts on the SCMB, I earn my paycheck by working as the assistant sports editor for a newspaper in Central Kansas. Over the past two years, most of the excitement I've experienced through this job has come from the basketball players I've covered at the local junior college (six D-I players in the last two years).

However, this past week, Barton County Community College has made its name known on a worldwide scale as it has 12 former athletes competing in Athens. Last night, Veronica Campbell form Jamaica, who ran at Barton in 2003, won the gold medal in the 200. They even mentioned Barton County on NBC. Today, John Moffitt and Bernard Williams, both Barton alumns, won silver medals for the U.S. So far, Barton alums have won five medals with another possible three that could be won in the relay events.

Just thought you all should know; the next time someone mentiones Kansas, don't think just wheat and endless prairie (although, that's ok too..there's a lot of it) also think of a worldwide reknown track and field program. Aaaaand your old buddy Noon, there to cover it.

LOL, cool stuff, Ryan. :) Must be a good feeling to have your local town getting international recognition. When I think of Kansas, I think of The Wizard of Oz and tornados ... love tornados, except when they wreck your house. :uhoh: By the way, did you ever get the new SC site to display for you?

When I think of Kansas I think of George Brett....and pine tar.
Hey it's cool to here you're a A.E.. I'm just starting a three year journalism program myself, hopefully someday I'll be doing something similar.

First off, Noon: Are you hiring? I've got a slew of journalism awards and there are no good jobs up here.
Second: That's really cool. I once interviewed Rod White, who was on the gold-medal archery team in 1996. The sports editor at my small daily paper covered a couple of Lauryn Williams' high school track meets.
My interview subjects, by the way, include George W. Bush (at a press conference in 2000 when he was running for president -- and I didn't vote for him), Dan Rooney and Johnny Unitas.
