Yeah I know I jumped UGA big from last week, but i also stated last week that if they beat LSU bad, I would move them up.

Bix, except for the second half vs S Carolina, UGA has played HORRIBLE this year. If they beat LSU convincingly this week, they will move back up.

Louisville has looked impressive this year, and if they beat Miami, they can run the table. They are capable of beating big teams. Remember the FSU game a few years back?

That was a home game in a driving rainstorm for UL though and the game in two weeks is a trip to lovely Miami, one of the toughest places for road teams to win in. That was also FSU's worst team in recent years they finished the season 9-5 .

1. Oklahoma Sooners - Remained No.1 after a solid 28-13 victory over Texas Tech. It wasnt a blow out but Adrian Peterson ran all over the place and is solidified as one of my players of the year so far.

2. Georgia Bulldogs - Made a big leap from last week after an impressive victory over the LSU Tigers. Stingy defense proved to be catalyst of the win by allowing only 16 points.

3. Auburn Tigers - Also made a huge jump from last week to number 3 after laying a severe 34-10 beat down to the Volunteers IN Tennessee. Cadillac Williams is THE man and the Tigers are 5-0.

4. Miami Hurricanes - Dropped down to No. 4 but had their most complete game they've played this year beating Georgia Tech 27-3. Berlin threw for 3 TD and no interceptions. There was an unfortunate blow to their team as they lost All-American Eric Winston out for the remainder of the year with a knee injury.

5. Purdue Boilermakers - First time ranking in my top ten after a solid 41-16 victory over Notre Dame. Kyle Orton played oustanding and directed two 97 yard TD drives.

5. Utah Utes - Remained at No. 5 this week after a good 28-7 victory over New Mexico. Quarterback Alex Smith ran for two touchdowns and Steve Savoy caught 11 passes for 150 yards.

7. Boise State Broncos - Stayed at No. 7 from last week after a nice 38-20 victory over Southern Methodist. I wasnt particularly impressed with the way the defense played, but played well when it mattered. Zabransky had 190 passing yards leading them to a 5-0 record.

8. Texas Longhorns - Dropped down to No. 8 this week, but not because they didnt play well, only becuase there were teams that played alot better. Beat Baylor in an old fashioned blow out 44-14. Cedric Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns.

9. Minnesota Golden Gophers - First time ranking in my top 10 after beating Penn State 16-7. They recorded a 5-0 start in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1940-41.

10. Virginia Cavaliers - Broke into my top 10 after handly defeating Syracuse 31-10. Hagans passed for 202 yards and a TD while running in two scores and 81 yards on the ground.

USC Trojans - Idle for this weekend, but dropped out of my top 10 completely. I really wasnt impressed with the quality of win against Stanford. A 3 point difference is just not acceptable for that caliber of team in my opinion. There were better teams out there to be replaced with.

Ohio State Buckeyes - Dropped out of my top 10 after a crushing loss to the hands of Northwestern. (heheh) When you're in OT, you have to score, if there's anyone who would know that, it's the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Tennessee Volunteers - Dropped out of my top ten by getting embarrassed at home by the Georgia Bulldogs. The offense couldnt get anything going and miscues and mistakes cost them dearly.

1. USC - Until they lose, they're #1. I feel they've deserved that much respect.

2. Oklahoma - Adrian Peterson is a scary, scary back.

3. Georgia - I was very impressed by their victory over LSU.

4. Texas - Oklahoma vs. Texas has me drooling.

5. Auburn - 31-3 at the half vs. the Vols? I don't care if the Vols aren't even ranked, that's an accomplishment.

6. Miami - They might have a shot at the National Title if they could find a QB.

7. Purdue - Put Notre Dame back in their place. Very impressive outing.

8. Minnesota - Takes care of business week in and week out. I'm thinking this is the year this team breaks out, and if Wisconsin and Michigan don't have anything to say about it, goes to the BCS.

9. Wisconsin - Ohio State will be the major test for this team, if they win this one, only Minnesota lies in the way to a BCS appearance. No Michigan on the schedule.

10. Boise State - Put them in a major conference, say, the Pac-10, and I think they're fighting for a major bowl game appearance.

I left my top ten at home, so I'll get it in tonight.
Sorry to disappoint, but your Dawgs are at 11, though.

I couldn't throw out someone that I have in my top ten that most people don't... can't remember offhand who it was, though. And I couldn't in all fairness have a tie for 10th, either.

Let them show their offense against next week, and then we'll be talking.

And besides, maybe you don't want them in my top ten. I just put OSU in at #10, and you saw what happened to them this past weekend...

This was a very interesting post and even more interesting logic.

I'm kind of curious why then Georgia, Auburn, Boise and Minnesota remain in this particular top 10.

Georgia struggles at HOME against Marshall. Boise beats BYU(a team SC beat by 32 at BYU) by 1 at HOME, Auburn(while impressive this week could only beat a very average LSU team by 1 at HOME and Minnesota was less then impressive against PSU at Home. And there are others with that top 10 also.

There are very few '95 Nebraska's or '72 USC's....teams that dominate everyone from the first game to the last thru a season....all teams struggle at some point. SC playeed a quiet 1st half, with several strange plays that benefitted Stanford..to there credit. But SC dominated the 2nd half, giving up only 1 first down and zero points.

I dont know if SC is the #1 team in the country, but for them to not be in the top 10 with this logic(4-0 with 3 road games) is kind of strange.

I guess SC is being held to a higher standard and as an SC fan thats a compliment!

I put Texas in at #10 on my list because I just ran out of teams basically.

#47...

You'll get alot of flack on here for bashing Minnesota. It's the pro-offense, we've- been- doormats- for -so- long, look -at- us- put -up points mentality that everyone loves to boast about.

It's also the perfect set up for a Blue feasting this weekend. Right now in Ann Arbor, it's business as usual since 1890, with MU going the " slow and steady" wins the race mentality. In Minnesota, people are scratching and sniffing their own press clippings, getting a buzz of the media love.

'78,

Yeah I got a feeling about the Maize and Blue somehow figuring a way to win this one also and like Dave I dont think Michi are world beaters by any stretch, but good enough to beat Minny.

And '78, based on your SIG quote from the esteemed coach Tressel, you are 3-0 in the preseason and 0-1 when it counts.

buckeyefan78
10-04-2004, 11:31 PM
Yeah, I know I'm 0-1 when it counts. I would say that I'd rather be 1-3 right now, with the only win against NW, but I get yelled at enough for embracing the conference races. That is how I feel though, with NW being the only game that counts, but I'm a senile old man to most with that thinking.

This is going to be a good test for Tressel and OSU. They've risen to the top, and this is the first setback. If his history at Youngstown is any indication, Tressel finds a way to right the ship everytime. Still, I'm concerned, if for only one thing: the Michigan game. Losing two years in a row to them we'll bring me one step closer to the ledge, one I threw myself off of many times in the Cooper era. With his early Michigan success and a fictional National Title, he's here for awhile. I wish coaches could be hired/fired based soley on the Michigan game. That's not reality though, unfortunately.

Everyone, please join me in rolling our eyes at this gross distortion and ridiculous proclomation of martyrdom.

Since some of us prefer the college football environment of 2004 to that of 1954, we're godless anarchists who hate conference races!

Mike--I misremembered how I finally settled my top ten. Georgia debuts at #8.
1 Southern Cal
2 Oklahoma
3 Texas
4 Virginia
5 Purdue
6 Miami
7 Auburn
8 Georgia
9 Florida
10 Cal

I think I was trying to keep Minny in the top ten, but a 9-point win over a not-good Penn State team and a concern about the Gophers' tackling made me drop them when all was said and done.

Meanwhile, my top five has been stationary for the entire season, although I've juggled 3-5 a time or two, those five have been there from the beginning. I've no intention of moving 1 and 2 till given reason. It'll be interesting to see how OU and Texas shakes out.

Ah, but you seemed to have forgotten that this is my logic, not yours.

This is my top 10 ranking for THIS week. My rankings have and will continue to change week in and week out. If I want to omit an idle team from my top ten and include a team that played, I will. After all. It is my logic and my ranking. Thanks for playing :)

PS: Im sure I'll have USC on next week as I see them crushing California after having a bye week and having a chance to regroup.

Kevin...

How much did I boast about OSU over NC St. this past fall, leading up to the game and after? Yeah, a bunch, for proving the outsiders wrong on these boards. It was great, winning against the overhyped ACC and the national pundits at large. Now those outsiders ( Pro Info Sports, Dave, doublee ) have moved onto the next big thing nationally because they don't have the history of regionalization like Big Ten people do.

Going 3-0 against NON-conf and 35 cents gets you a phone call.

A win against NW gets me one step closer to Pasadena.

Go ahead and take the phone call. It's reality on the other end, saying OSU will never be respected outside of the midwest for their deeds, so being the best inside is what you must cling too.

The 98 Badgers went 11-1, winning the Big Ten outright and won the Rose Bowl. The only problem, they lost to Michigan and didn't play Ohio State. In the nation's eyes, Gods, in my eyes, BUMS. In 99, they blasted OSU, but lost to Michigan AGAIN, going 11-2, with another Rose Bowl win. Again, Gods in the national media, and I will admit a nice run for a lower rung team historically, and yes, blasting OSU IN COLUMBUS, but that Michigan loss...

I see visions of Minnesota of 04 here. Go ahead and fawn over the Gophers, but they'll get no respect from me if they lose at Blue.

And by the way Kevin, sometimes conference races are important in your love of fictional national titles. Have we not forgotten the Sooners this past year? Everyone's in a hurry to put the cart before the horse to get position to boast nationally, but they don't deal with that pesky neighbor who is getting the better of them. Beat that pesky neighbor first, then move on.

Well, you could look at the Illinois State game and say the Gophers let up. And I have to believe part of the reason they didn't torch Penn State is because they were looking ahead to next week. Which is understandable, but still a cause for concern.

No I haven't. I LOVE conference races, I care FAR more about it than the non-conference slate. But, I like the year-in-and-out-uniqueness the OOC schedule brings (for the most part), particularly since OSU does not shy away from tough opponents.

You're confusing my fictional disdain for the conference season with your real disdain for the OOC season.

I'll address this in awhile...after I'm done watching "Ohio State Week" on ESPN Classic.

Tell me if in that show Kevin they list the top ten teams of all time, like I've seen done recently ( CBS did it in August I believe) by numerous outlets. There, you'll find no mention of the 68 Buckeyes and gushing over the 01 Hurricanes, who were essentially the same team in 02, that lost to the Buckeyes !

Oh yeah, OSU gets alot of respect outside the midwest. Perhaps that show is on because there are more OSU alums in the country than any other college besides maybe UCLA or Texas, and it's close. Ratings are always nice.

Yes, OSU doesn't shy away from tough opponents, but NC State was tough by the media's standards ( and some on here, who shall remain nameless ). They aren't a program worthy to play OSU, so the Buckeyes had no real Non-conf big game this year.
Texas next year, yes, but that's next year. I considered the Notre Dame win ( first one ) NEARLY on the level of a Big Ten win over Michigan.

Who can I talk trash to about Cincy, Marshall, or NC State aside from a few days after the game on here? That NW win will last a LIFETIME, in Big Ten lure, and in the minds of the kids, on both sides of the ball.

KevinBeane
10-06-2004, 10:00 AM
As far as the '68 Buckeyes go, I admit to not being much of a historian, so I can't speak to whether or not it's a crime that that team is left off "top ten teams of all time" lists.

And it's fine that you disapprove of OSU scheduling MAC and Cincinnatiesque teams. I appreciate it that OSU will help out it's MAC/Ohio/Midwestern brethern like that (Lord knows they need it), but I can see it your way, too.

But that's not what I was talking about. You were giving yourself the violin treatment for caring about the conference season, not for impugning the non-conference season. We ALL care about the conference more than the September battles with Directional Mid-Major U.

MountaineerDave
10-06-2004, 02:51 PM
Hey, do you realize that the next time Cincy shows up on an OSU schedule, they'll be a BCS team?

Till '07 or '08, anyway. (I'm not sure which year, though if the Big East is still a dunghole---that is, WVU and UofL and UConn don't show some real life beginning next year, the BCS status could be rescinded).

Never crossed my mind Dave, the Cincy-BCS scenario. Interesting to note.

Kevin...

Check this out about the 68 Buckeyes for the hell of it...

1. Went 10-0.

2. Beat Michigan, 50-14, the largest margin of victory ever over Blue.

3. Went 4-0 against teams in the Top 14, average margin of victory in those games was 20 points !

4. Handed USC a loss in the Rose Bowl, 27-16. It was one of ONLY two losses for USC over a 36 game stretch in the late 60s and early 1970 !

5. The perfect 10-0 season was the " meat" of a 22 game winning streak for the Buckeyes spanning over three years.

6. The Buckeyes averaged 32 points per game that year ( a miracle today for them would be that kind of output). In today's offensive era, that would be the equivalent of easily 50-55 points a game.

7. ELEVEN All-Americans were on this team, either this year or later at OSU, as the team was comprised mostly of sophmores. Yeah, look that over again....ELEVEN !

8. SIX players were taken in the first round of the NFL draft off this team. AMAZING !

9. And of course, for #47, the amazing Rose Bowl comeback. Down 10-0 to the Trojans, the Buckeyes came back and won 27-16. After O.J. Simpson ran for an 80 yard TD early, OSU held him to ONLY 91 yards on 27 carries the rest of the game in the battle of #1 vs. #2.

Just a little Buckeye history. At one point, the Sporting News did put this team in it's Top Ten of all time, but I'm not sure if they still do. I'd have to check on it. Anyway, I think it's the only publication that has done so. Just ticks me off.

I find it funny that the media gives so much love to the 01 Canes when OSU beat them and yet the media doesn't recognize the 02 Buckeyes or the 68 team. #47 would probably bring up the 72 Trojans, who did blast OSU in the Rose Bowl that year, but revenge was sweet for the Buckeyes. They dismantled the Trojans in 73 in the Rose Bowl giving USC only it's 3rd loss over a 48 game span in the mid 70s. But yes, the 72 Trojans do, and should, get their credit. I just ask for a little for my Buckeyes.

So, when OSU wasn't winning the National Title outright, they were breaking up gigantic winning streaks or runs, with little or no credit from the national pundits.

Now, back in the day, it was a different story. The national media LOVED OSU, and the battles between them and Michigan. Add USC to the mix, and the Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry, and that was the heart of college football. I don't understand why OSU doesn't get to " translate" their past greatness like these other programs have in recent years.
