I really didn't have a problem with it, as long as the field and jerseys were untouched, and the proceeds went to other areas outside of athletics, but appearantly Michigan wanted to pull the plug first, with OSU concurring. Alumni reaction was horrible to the deal. Perhaps it was for the best, considering it might have been only a matter of time before SBC wanted to get put on the field and on jerseys.

I can't believe you weren't absolutely opposed to this. I remember when I first heard it my reaction was "ohh man, buckeye is gonna go nuts on this." I was very much opposed to having this game called the "SBC Michigan-Ohio State Classic". I am shocked that buckeye wasn't as well. Just when you think you know someone. :)

Here's the thing about the deal Ricky, it was OSU-Michigan getting one over on " the system." Look at the details of the deal: no logo on field or on jerseys ( unlike Texas-OU), no exclusive department getting the $ ( most of it was going to go to OSU's library and on campus housing, unlike the Texas-OU deal as well), and only signs in and around the stadium were going to be put up ( OSU already has sponsors like Huntington Bank and Coke).
The thing was, both schools' alumni didn't like it, and for Michigan, it was too much because there are NO ads in their stadium right now. For 1.2 million bucks, that isn't a bad deal, esp. when proceeds were not exclusive to the Athletic Department. But I do understand people being against it, but there are worse things out there that we have little to no control over, like the BCS.
I understand people being against the name of the game being corporate, but who pays attention to that anyway? It's " The Game" and we all know it. If some greasy suits in Texas ( where SBC is based) think anyone gives a damn about their official name and logo during " The Game", I say laugh at them and take the $. They deserve it.
Who are you and what have you done with the real buckeye? Let me guess, Kobe is also your favorite player? :P
I also thought you were be vehemently opposed to this simply because it is commercializing the classic and tradition of this rivalry, which is one of the top-five in sports, IMO.

First off Marc, it is #1 in the rivalry department cause I SAID SO, just to let you know...LOL.
Again, look at the details of the deal, compare it to the Texas-OU SBC agreement, and I think it's fine because the OSU-Michigan one was literally highway robbery.
You know I hate the system Marc, but there's nothing like joining the system on a smaller scale, only to scam them. A little juvenile, yes, but oh well...LOL.
Marc, you're young, will you EVER call the Orange Bowl the FedEX Orange Bowl unless you are in a board room pitching FedEx's new duct tape to some suit at the Orange Bowl? No, you won't. It's a joke. I know I won't, but I'm old and so used to calling all the games by their original names. I do adjust with some things, like calling the University of Southern California USC. Just a note, us old folks call them Southern Cal from back in the day...LOL. But I don't think people do today.

This is getting OT, but I don't think it's juvenile! I work for a huge uber-conglomerate bank which is sort of place I thought I was too prinicpled to work for, given my politics.
But, I tell myself it's okay as long as I donate generously (with the Bank's money, paying my paycheck) to organizations that fight corporate greed. One of these days, I'm actually going to do it!
To be fair, it seems like my employer keeps their nose clean, I haven't as yet been privvy to any policy that has appalled me.

This was something I didn't know till about a year ago, I heard Pete Carroll on local talk radio--his Trojans were making their run, he was in NE before taking the job in LA, he still had some ties to the place-- and he noted that it's not called USC there. Southern Cal was okay, Southern California was proper.
So, I adopted Southern Cal. Which is more to type, but that's okay.

I thought I heard the opposite - USC was okay, Southern "Cal" was verboten. I think we need #47 to arbitrate.

In Buckeye country Dave back in the day, when all was right with the world and USC-Michigan-OSU were the powers that be, Southern Cal was used by the midwest folks, with I believe a mixture of Southern Cal and Southern California out west. Indeed, when I lived in California, they were called Southern California about 90% of the time, and the other 10% was Southern Cal. Then again, those could have been transplants from back east. I know I called them Southern Cal when in the Golden State.
USC is a new term, but I think this old stubborn goat should get credit for using the new term.
Actuallly Kevin is correct.
The school and they say it right in the media guide, does NOT like being referred to as Southern Cal by the media.
They prefer, again going by whats in the media guide............I havent sat down in the last few days with Pres. Sample or AD Garrett..........but the media guide is very specific in that they want to be referred to as USC or Southern California.
Now, if you go back or even still listen to Keith Jackson, you do here the reference to USC as Southern Cal................for some reason and I dont know when it started, the University let it be known they did not want to be called that.
My bad for not keeping better tabs on this over the years! I should have had the foresight to KNOW this would one day come up in conversation on a message board someshwere..........lol.

I have what I belive to be a winning theory.
Above all, "Cal" denotes to the University of California, flagship of the University of California system. USC, I believe, does not want any casual fan to think there is any affilaition between Cal and USC, probably because that University of California system DOES include their archrival, UCLA.

That bears out what I was saying then #47...
Old Big Ten folks calling them Southern Cal ( due to hatred of them and knowing it upsets them).
People in California calling them Southern California ( due to liking them, which I put at 90%).
And the other 10% of people in California calling them Southern Cal ( again, probably the transplants, and thinking back, a guy I worked with from Nebraska while I lived in California called them Southern Cal).
Generally, younger people refer to them as USC though, even here in the midwest, where they don't know the hatred any self-respecting Michigan or Ohio State fan had for them from the old days.

Well, someone needs to inform the Southern California head coach, then... 'cuz he's running a campaign of misinformation.
Dave
Personally, I dont care what ANYONE calls them...............as long as they keep winning!

No, he's not Dave...
He wants them to be called USC or Southern California, as #47 noted. USC is probably for the younger people that will become players, and Southern California for the old alums. It's just that people in Ohio and Michigan ( midwest in general) call them Southern Cal because THEY DON'T LIKE IT AND WE DON'T LIKE THEM. The people I knew in California who called them Southern Cal were probably transplants who didn't think to fondly of them as well ( like the fellow teacher I worked with from Nebraska).
Pete's right, and I would venture to say he and the media guide put in USC for the younger crowd who know them by nothing other than that.

No, 78, when I heard Carroll, he said the one thing the University of Southern California shouldn't be called is USC. Now, this was a little over a year ago, but, that's what he said.
47 reports the SC media guide suggests that Southern Cal is undesirable.
They are opposed.
Dave
On page 3 of the 2000 USC media guide in Big headlines it specifically says........
ITS NOT 'SOUTHERN CAL'
it then reads.
Note to the media: In editorial references to athletic teams of the University of Southern California, the following are preferred: USC, Southern California, So. California, Troy and Trojans for mens teams and Women of Troy for the womens teams. Please DO NOT use Southern Cal(its like calling San Francisco 'Frisco' or North Carolina "North Car.). The usuage of "Southern Cal" on licensed apparel and merchandise is limited in scope and necessary to protect trademark rights.
I also know Dave, because I always read Pete Carrolls Monday Morning QB session, he constantly refers to USC as...........USC. It is possible you maybe misheard something.............actually it doesnt really matter.
Anyway, so there it was from the media guide, again I'm still waiting on President Samples return call.
