Sure Apple is better in some little ways, but until they can price competitively: www.notworthit.com

I use iTunes cuz of my iPod, which really is the only MP3 player on the market of that claibre so they can price it whatever they want IMO. iTunes seems to give out better sounds to my speakers than WMP and definitely better than WinAmp though. I'm not defending their other products though, that's a whoooooooooole other thread and we've already been there. But iTunes is a decent program and has WAY more features than both WMP and WA, probably combined... I would reccomend that piece of software to anyone whether they did or did not have an iPod. The 2 things I don't like about it are: 1) it's so big on the desktop and not compact at all... the mini-mode is MUCH too compact. 2) for whatever reason my video card's features are not available on iTunes -- things like transparency and always on top and sending it to designated areas of the screen, etc. Not only that, but whenever iTunes is open, it disables other windows the ability to go transparent.

I have yet to try the iPod... and deleted iTunes when I had to reload Quicktime and Apple decided to oh-so-conveniently bundle it in there for me.
I've always just figured the iPod had a nice clean elegant design and intuitive interface... but you basically get the same functionality without all the 'suave' much cheaper with competing MP3 players, and I don't need my iPod to wow the ladies.. I just need something to play my MP3s decently.

But then I keep hearing gushing stories like "my iPod changed my life!" , etc. And then most importantly a known huge Windows advocate and almost anti-Apple guy such as Lee here advocating the Pod. So is the sound quality and added features REALLY worth the hefty pricetag?

Marc

Shawn: all I can say is do you think they make fan sites for the other MP3 players like they do for the iPod (www.ipodlounge.com)? It is the benchmark everyone else is trying to copy, period. No one player blends ease of use, style, and functionality. It's more expensive and doesn't have every single feature possible, but it is the total package more than anything else. I'm on my second iPod and my family now owns four iPods and three Macs all in one year. And it's not just to look cool.

Also, Winamp is really going down the tubes, Shawn. It's lead developer, who really made it special and unique back in the day, is now gone as AOL bought it and he quit. AOL is going to ruin it, and that's why it hasn't been in development much lately. I use Winamp all the time when I used Windows, but am happily on iTunes now.

Lee: you are slowly being drawn by the Force to the Light Side, I can sense it. I'm surprised you admit to that much, because iTunes on Windows isn't NEARLY as smooth and good as it is on OS X. (Don't bother saying you're not, I'm just joking, albeit somewhat seriously). :D

ok fair enough Marc.... I actually agreed that the iPod was the superior product, my point of dissension was whether it was really worth the extra $$.

However, the iPod is and has been growing monstrously in popularity and shows no signs of stopping (any Apple stock owners? lucky bastards...).

This would seem to indicate that the product is well-balanced as far as quality/price ratio. SO, maybe it really IS that good. Guess I will have to check it out... especially since my Intel Pocket Concert mp3 player's memory is getting a bit buggy. But it had a great 3 year run, and was a very fine product for its time. :)

Shawn, I was just talking about the iTunes software in terms of sound quality; I'm not an audio-phile but from what I read most think the iPod is crap when it comes to audio quality (I can't tell the difference personally from iPod to computer but compared to other software iTunes sounds better than WMP & WA). ....but I definitely love the iPod (even though I am still feeling the ripple effects of it in my budget and will be for the rest of the year). That's it though. I said when I got it this would be my one and only Apple product; I'm as "dark" as ever. I would never buy a computer that couldn't be upgraded less I submit it back to their masters for absurd shipping and repair fees when I can do it by myself in my home in a few minutes... at some point I will have to ship my iPod to Apple when its battery runs out. There are too many negatives for me to part with my PC but I can admit iTunes is a decent music player and iPod rules far above and beyond any other MP3 player.

PC/WINDOWS FOREVER.

FOREVER.

Make no mistake about it.

is that really true? Say if I go out and buy a new Apple G4 or G5 (whatever's the latest, just for example), I cannot open it up and replace or upgrade any of the parts????
With the way that technology improves so quickly, the only way I've been able to afford to keep up is just buying only what I need and integrating it into my existing (Windows XP) system. If that is indeed true, that would be an immediate deal-breaker for me, as in no longer ever consider purchasing an Apple as long as that is true.

But I am going to check out iTunes again and possibly/probably replace WinAmp with it, if it's all that you guys are saying it is.

Oh, boy. Misconceptions abound. First of all, Apple has a repair program when you are under warranty where they overnight ship you a shipping package for you to use to send them your product for repair. You send it back via free overnight shipping and you can track its status online. Free and quick.

Unlike you two, I have experience with this. My Powerbook was severely damaged -- dead hard drive and damaged exterior casing. I received it back, free of charge, in like-new condition. Not a single scratch. They are fabulous!

Now, I know what you are thinking. If you don't want to ship it, you can take it to an Apple Store and have it examined and fixed right there -- free of charge by certified Apple technicians. If there are no Apple Stores near you, you can try CompUSA (although I wouldn't, bad experience); I'm not sure about the situation in Canada, but you have other options than shipping, and bottom line is that there are no absurd charges or restrictions like you are fabricating.

Shawn, you can upgrade your Apple like a PC, especially if it is a desktop, but I've never done it myself. The more and more I hear from Lee about his hatred for Apple, the more I find it is based off falsities and misconceptions. Knowing the truth about things would go a long way. And here is why I hate Microsoft: http://macslash.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/16/2346202

Drap & drop songs from explorer or wherever into the playlist area of WMP then click file -> save. Be careful though, playlists don't automatically save if you change them so when you do change them, u have to make sure you save it.

Thanks for the info, Marc..

Update: Well I have been using iTunes for a few days now and think I'm going to stick with it. It seemed like WinAmp had more options, but I like iTunes. Plus I am planning on buying a 10 GB iPod after the new year. Looks like you can pick one up for about $180. I see no reason to spend $399 on a 40 GB iPod when 10 GB will hold plenty, and I can always update the music.

I'm using half of my 10GB iPod... never thought I would usp that much!!... 500MB is taken up with my calendar/contacts though. ...and I don't listen to nearly all of that 10GB... some of those songs will never ever be touched :P

The fact is, that once the warranty goes out on Apple products you're dinged big-time. There's a reason the iPod warranty is only 12 months, because you have to get the battery replaced in 1.5-2.5 years!... for $99+tax+shipping to Apple. For me that is well over $130. That's a .5 year window between absolutely needing repair and maybe needing repair.

By skimming this web page, it appears to me that Marc hates Microsoft because they are protecting legitimate use of their software?? That is what I got out of that page but I just skimmed it so fill me in if I am wrong.

I find it humorous that when you go to download anything on the Apple website, the default choice is for WindowsXP machines, and the #8 reason to switch to a Mac is that you can use Microsoft Office on it, hahaha :D

Wrong, wrong, wrong! Apple provides an AppleCare extended warranty plan that for students is only $47 and extends your warranty for THREE years and includes phone support and FREE repair to any part of your iPod, including battery. And before you complain about having to pay for a warranty, keep in mind that it is standard for PC and Macs alike to charge for an extended warranty.

Um, the reason the default choice is for XP is because it knows you're using a PC. I visit on my Mac and it knows I'm on a Mac, so its default is Mac. And being able to use Office on the Mac is a great reason to switch. Isn't compatability with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. files with Windows machines a benefit? Isn't a familiar Office interface a benefit for Mac users? Of course. I use Office for Mac and love it. You can escape the hassles of Windows yet not have to sacrifice the tools you rely on for productivity.

As for the MacSlash page, Microsoft was mean-spirited and didn't even ask the "offending" site to take down the comment. It all stemmed from a comment a user posted eight months ago that allegedly contained a serial for a pre-release of the next version of Windows that was buried deep in the archives and not seen by anyone by search robots (this was confirmed by the site stats). Yet Microsoft immediately threatens the host to shutdown the site without even bothering to ask the site directly, considering it was not visible to 99.99999% of the people, and did so in a mean-spirited, threatening way.

yeah, Microsoft was rather Nazi on that.... even if it was a valid Longhorn serial.
