For the first time ever... I played tennis today! :)
It was pretty fun... maybe I'll get out on the court a few more times this summer...
...anyone have any tips on things to work on for rookies???

You just need to keep the ball in play as a rookie.
A fun game to play w/ friend is mini tennis...you just play inside the service box and you don't slam anything...it's pretty fun.

...but with mini-tennis... I mean, it'd be like playing badminton, because how are you to keep it in the service area and have it bounce once, as well?....
Congratulations, Lee. Kind of surpising to me this was your first time playing, but then again, you're in Canada. :D
For me, the hardest about his getting a good serve in. I'm pretty good once I get my winter rust off, though.

Well tell me, Marc, when was the last time you skated with a stick in your hand and shot frozen rubber on a sheet of ice?
My point exactly. :)

Your serve will get better if you keep playing...
In mini-tennis you want to let it bounce one before hitting it...it will make it a little bit more difficult and you have to run for it more.

I have also ice skated... and I've played hockey before...but never on ice.
I'm posting on the Tennis Board!
Anyway, I like tennis, though I'm not very good at it. (Unless you count my talent at Mario Tennis on N64 :D ) It is a really cool sport...wish I would get into it more.

My first post in the Tennis forum!
Well I used to play tennis a lot casually in the summer time but my football life has taken over the summers but when I get time I'm not too bad. I can get the serve in and after getting going I can put a little whip behind it. My weakest shot is by far my backhand so I just try to keep everyhting on my right side, if I go backhand, its slow, easy, and high over the net. I'm quick enough to get to the balls but can't always get it over the net LOL.

The best thing for a tennis rookie is to find
players of a similar skill level and meet on the courts every week, same time. Rely on each other to learn and get fitter through tennis.
You need to learn grip, forehand and backhand.
Your backhand rotates 90 degrees from forehand position. Knuckles on top. Hit topspin, low to high. Follow through. Air your armpit. You're going around a beachball on your backswing.
Step forward while swinging.
AND what I learned from golf only recently, is to snap the racket on your serve. Lead with your elbow, and crack the racket through to add 10 or 20 MPH to that dang ball.
Finally, learn how to hit a topspin serve, by hitting UP on the ball. It takes a big kick and gives your opponent too much trouble! Kick it out wide, and you're set up to cross court him big time.
Thanks for the pointers, Spider. :)
