Former Kansas City prep coach Myron Piggie, 40, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison this week for tax evasion and plying his players with cash and thus defrauding four universities. Piggie funneled over $35,000 in cash to players Korleone Young, Corey Maggette (Duke), Andre Williams (Oklahoma State) and Jaron Rush (UCLA) and Kareem Rush (Missouri). A former crack dealer with a lengthy police records, Piggie came into summer basketball power in the late 1990s, putting together the star-studded CMH 76ers and receiving substantial funding from Nike, Kansas booster Tom Grant II and professional sports agents Jerome Stanley and Kevin Poston. Citing Piggie's greed in taking advantage of the players, the court sentenced him to the maximum allowable time. Williams and both Rush brothers served NCAA suspensions for accepting cash from Piggie. The Association ruling is still pending on whether Duke should forfeit revenue and five victories from the 1999 NCAA Tournament for playing Maggette.
