Last week: 10-4. Season totals: 31-27-2, Pct. .533. Best Bets: 3-8-1, Pct. .292.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

Washington 27 (+4), N.Y. GIANTS 24 - Should the recent outbursts by first Tiki Barber and then Jeremy Shockey surprise anyone? After all, when you treat your players like children, you can't complain too loudly when they act like children; and the Giants, for their part, have always played like children coming off a bye week, "boasting" both the NFL's worst record doing so (3-14) and its longest current losing streak (five in a row).

JACKSONVILLE 17, N.Y. Jets 13 (+7) - The Jets are playing everybody tough and I just don't feel comfortable laying substantial wood on the Jaguars and their Punch-and-Judy offense.

NEW ENGLAND 16, Miami 3 (+9 1/2) - Shouldn't it be painfully obvious to one and all that Daunte Culpepper simply isn't right physically? Nick Saban needs to swallow his pride and start Joey Harrington.

CAROLINA 28, Cleveland 17 (+9) - The Panthers are a completely different team when they do have Steve Smith in there and the Browns won't erase any 18-point deficits this week.

INDIANAPOLIS 63, Tennessee 13 (+19) - Well I guess the NFL has no right to pontificate about the alleged lack of competitive balance in major-league baseball - especially when in the latter's just-concluded regular season no team achieved even a .600 winning percentage, the second time in the new millennium this has happened.

GREEN BAY 27 (+3), St. Louis 17 - It will take a lot more than a stinger to keep Brett Favre out of this game and the home team in this series has won the last four meetings, all by double digits.

CHICAGO 31, Buffalo 3 (+11) - Another home-dominated series, in this case six in a row both straight up and against the spread, by a combined 83 points; and when Chicago's defense shuts down Willis McGahee, watching J.P. Losman try and beat it through the air will not be a pretty sight.

MINNESOTA 17, Detroit 10 (+6) - But be very careful here: Yes, the Lions have lost to the Vikings eight consecutive times and also eight in a row at Triple H, but Detroit's respective spread records therein are 3-4-1 and 3-3-2 and Minnesota's offense is very limited at this point in time.

NEW ORLEANS 16, Tampa Bay 0 (+6) - Bruce Gradkowski doesn't stand a chance in the dome and the Bucs are 5-12 against the line coming off the bye; best bet.

SAN FRANCISCO 24, Oakland 17 (+3 1/2) - You have to go back nearly three whole years (to December 7, 2003) to find the last time the 49ers were favored by this much! But at least they've got all of their best players out on the field - which is more than one can say for Oakland, where Art Shell's jihad against Jerry Porter shows no signs of ending anytime soon. Shell and Raiders offensive coordinator Tom Walsh are the two biggest jokes in the league right now.

ARIZONA 13 (+3), Kansas City 0 - With Damon Huard at quarterback the Chiefs scored five touchdowns at home after having scored zero touchdowns on the road; and with the retractable roof closed and all the resulting crowd noise?

Dallas 20 (+2), PHILADELPHIA 16 - The Eagles could be without Brian Westbrook, Donte' Stallworth and Reggie Brown - and even if this weren't the case how can you give points with them in a division game when they have lost seven such games in a row?

Pittsburgh 23 (+3 1/2), SAN DIEGO 17 - It's just about now or never for the defending Super Bowl champs and Pittsburgh has beaten the Chargers five straight.

MONDAY NIGHT

DENVER 21, Baltimore 10 (+4) - Not ready to anoint Steve McNair Comeback Player of the Year just yet and the Broncos are a league-best 13-4 against the spread coming off a bye week.

BEST BETS: CHICAGO, NEW ORLEANS, ARIZONA

Jeff Boswell could be a back-to-back winner - and will be either if Denver covers or there is a push; a Baltimore cover makes Marc the Week 5 winner.
