Last week: 5-7-2. Season totals: 36-34-4, Pct. .513. Best Bets: 4-9-2, Pct. .333.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. Giants 20 (+3), ATLANTA 10 - Would you believe that the home team in this series has lost the last ten meetings? And it's a lot easier to believe that the shaky Giant pass defense can have a second straight solid outing facing the worst passing game in football this side of Oklahoma.

N.Y. JETS 28, Miami 7 (+3) - Steve Young sings better than the Jets played last week in Jacksonville; but the same observation can be made about Miami's recent play at Club Med (1-7 straight up and 1-6-1 against the spread in its last eight visits) and on the artificial carpet generally (eight consecutive losses) and Nick Saban may have lost the respect and confidence of his players with his ungainly handling of his team's quarterback situation.

WASHINGTON 16, Tennessee 13 (+9) - You knew Mark Brunell couldn't stay hot forever, didn't you? And The Bud Adams Franchise (Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Tennessee Titans) already has two losses in Washington by this very score.

Cincinnati 21, TAMPA BAY 20 (+6) - The winless Bucs did run Carolina to two points in their last home game and the Bengals are 4-13 straight up following a bye week, including 1-9 when the opponent was not doing likewise; take it.

DETROIT 13, Buffalo 6 (+1 1/2) - The Bills have struggled indoors (2-7 straight up and 3-6 against the line dating back to 1999) and J.P. Losman continues to struggle, period. Graduation day for Rod Marinelli.

BALTIMORE 16, Carolina 10 (+2 1/2) - Been going back and forth all week on this one. Panthers offense comes off disappointing showing against Cleveland and it is more blessed to give than to receive two and a half points.

Philadelphia 38, NEW ORLEANS 28 (+3) - According to some sources Donte' Stallworth's departure from New Orleans was something less than amicable, so maybe it's just as well that he's doubtful with a tweaked hamstring, thus avoiding what would have been a poor man's T.O. story line for this game. Saints pass defense regressed badly last week and they've dropped six straight to the Eagles outright and five in a row against the spread.

ST. LOUIS 23 (+3 1/2), Seattle 14 - The Seahawks are an NFL-worst 3-13-1 against the line coming off the bye week, which Shaun Alexander won't be doing; consider this the coming-out party for the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx.

DALLAS 31, Houston 17 (+12 1/2) - A game against the league's bottom-ranked defense could come just in time for Drew Bledsoe and the Texans have dropped nine straight on rugs by a combined 156 points, but this one could be tricky with Dallas coming off an exasperating loss in Philly and possibly looking ahead to hosting the Giants next week on Monday night.

PITTSBURGH 14, Kansas City 11 (+7) - Damon Huard can't possibly win three in a row with two of them on the road, can he? But this number is impossible to lay the way Ben Roethlisberger is playing.

San Diego 13, SAN FRANCISCO 7 (+9) - Marty Ball giving nine points on the road? No thanks.

DENVER 23, Oakland 6 (+15) - Another dangerous game involving a big favorite: Yes, Mike Shanahan is 15-6-1 versus the points against the team that fired him back in the day, but Denver's offense isn't exactly setting the world on fire and believe it or not the Raiders are tenth in the league in total defense with 294.8 yards allowed per game.

MONDAY NIGHT

Chicago 24, ARIZONA 17 (+10) - The Bears have a 4-0-1 spread record this year while the Cardinals are 0-4-1 - yet interestingly, both pushes occurred indoors. Not quite ready to place Chicago's offense among the NFL's elite, so if Matt Leinart can avoid rookie mistakes Arizona has a decent shot at covering.

BEST BETS: N.Y. GIANTS, N.Y. JETS, ST. LOUIS

So I see there is a thread over in the Lounge titled, "Who is Ellis?"

Well I'll tell you who Ellis is: He's the winner of Week 6 regardless of what happens in tonight's (seemingly) dud in the desert.

And there is a bizarre situation this week in that any of three different people can complete the exacta: It will be Seth D with a Bears cover, "The Dude" with a Cardinals cover, and bama4256 if it's a push!

Complete results and updated standings after the game.
