ESPN is reporting that Shawne Merriman is to be suspended for a positive steroids test:

I guess Merriman is not as naturally gifted or achieved success from as much hardwork and dedication as we thought. This could be a huge blow to the Chargers as he is the heart of that defense.

Don't you feel a lot safer now that we are being protected from the scourge of so-called performance-enhancing drugs in sports? Why this is an even graver threat to our way of life than terrorism!
Now excuse me while I tune to TVG and get ready to place a bet on that first-time Lasix horse in the second at Calder.

So, what? The NFL should be spending money on defeating terrorists instead of trying to run a clean league?

If this issue doesn't bother horse racing, then why should it bother the NFL, MLB etc.?
All these self-appointed guardians of "morality" should get a life instead of conspiring to ruin everyone else's.

Shouldn't your question be restated to say: "Why don't those involved in horse racing stop turning a blind eye to the abundance of performance enhancement drugs used in their sport, and start using proactive measures like those that the NFL and MLB have recently implemented towards eliminating their use?"
And the NFL should suspend Shawne Merriman because he tested positive for an illegal substance. Case closed.

So, the league and the player's union should not care that he is ingesting a chemical that is shown to have detrimental effects to one's health later in life when it is used on a regular basis? I guess the league should have no concern whatsoever about players taking a substance that is known to cause rage and elevated aggression when it used regularly. That is all they need for someone to snap into roid rage on the field and put someone in the hospital, or worse yet, the morgue because he cannot control his aggression.
As toby points out steroids are illegal, unless you have a doctor's prescription to be using them of course.

But supplements that are available over-the-counter are not illegal.
That said, Merriman's laywer is full of it when he stated that's where the nandrolone came from: I happened to be in a MaxMuscle outlet a while back, and the supplements containing nandrolone and similar ingredients have been removed from the shelves (they were two years ago when the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 was passed by Congress).

When will his appeal be ruled upon?
