As was widely expected John Bunting will not be back next season.

The chatter around here is already starting for Butch Davis and Jim Fassell.

Some of the media is speculating that Frank Cignetti may get a shot as he is seen as a potential up-and-coming head coaching candidate at the college level. Plus, they also feel confident that they can hang onto Mike Paulus as Cignetti was one of the main reasons Paulus committed to UNC.

I would go with Butch Davis. He's a proven college winner and I'm surprised he's still unemployed. Fassell ... blah. But I wouldn't mind an up-and-comer, either.

Butch Davis would be ideal, but I don't know UNC is going to be willing to pony up that kind of cash for a head football coach. But, then again, they did give their OC and DC hefty raises after last season.

My guess is that Davis is still unemployed for two reasons: a) he is still collecting money from the Browns and b) he is waiting for the right job to come along.

The Miami job will most assuredly come open after this season and the Carolina job is a good one for the right coach. Mack Brown did elevate the Heels to the point where they were perenially in contention for a top 10-15 ranking.

Steve Logan, the former coach at ECU, is being mentioned as well. He has some ties to the UNC program as he helped them in the process of selecting Cignetti, the current OC, as the new OC last spring. Logan would not be a horrible choice as he currently coaches QBs in NFL Europe and has a pretty good track record of developing QBs. Given that he would have far more resources to work with at UNC than he did at ECU he could probably get the Heels back to being a respectable program.

In the end I think they end up with either Cignetti, who is seen as a guy who will make a good head coach some day, or Logan.

Why would anyone want this job other than to use it as stepping stone?

The same reason most coaches take 98% of the other jobs in college. Aren't there really only a handful of jobs that are the be-all-end-all jobs in college football anyway?

The hot rumor is that Butch Davis has said he is interested in the job but that he failed UNC's background check, but my guess is he is just doing that to get his name back out there as being available.
