Grim coincidence between fatal plane crashes
A man who said he nearly accompanied Cory Lidle on his fatal flight in New York City ended up meeting the same tragic fate 34 days later in California.
Bob Cartwright, whose friend and personal pilot died in the plane crash that also killed the New York Yankees pitcher, died Tuesday in another private plane accident.
According to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Cartwright, 68, and two other men perished when their plane crashed into the shoreline of Big Bear Lake, near Cartwright's mountain home in Sugarloaf, Calif.
Last month Cartwright's friend, Tyler Stanger, invited him to a playoff game between the Yankees and Detroit Tigers. Cartwright was unable to attend. Lidle and Stanger died Oct. 11 when their plane crashed into a 40-story apartment building on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
"I was supposed to be on that plane," Cartwright told friends at the time, according to the Daily Bulletin.
In a sad twist of fate, Cartwright went for a ride in a twin-engine plane Tuesday with another passenger, Bob McNutt, and his new flight instructor, Danny Stokes, 52. The three were heading to Las Vegas for a recreational trip, but witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the plane shortly after its takeoff from Big Bear City Airport.
Rod Watkins, a mutual friend of Cartwright and Stanger, also had been invited to the Tigers-Yankees game but could not attend. He said the accident that killed Stanger and Lidle shocked Cartwright.
"It hit him very hard," Watkins told the Daily Bulletin. "We were all close friends."
Cartwright invited Watkins to join him Tuesday for the flight to Las Vegas. Once again, Watkins could not go, and for the second time he avoided a flight that turned tragic.
Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the Big Bear accident and are expected to issue a preliminary report later this week.
