View Full Version : If there were a playoff......

A 4 team playoff would be perfect this year in my opinion. To me it would work much better than an 8 team playoff because you could eliminate the 1 loss teams who have already been beaten by one of the 4 playoff teams.

The 4 teams would be:

Ohio State

Winner of Florida/Arkansas (with the exception of: if Ark and USC both win their remaining games, then Ark would not be invited and would be replaced by either Wisconson or Boise State whichever was ranked higher)

Winner of Notre Dame/USC (if USC beats UCLA also)

Louisville or West Virginia (if they both finish with only 1 loss this would be the toughest one to call - with some leaning toward Louisville who beat WV, and some leaning towards whichever was ranked higher)

4 team Tournament might look like one of these 2:
OSU vs West Virginia
USC vs Florida

OSU vs Louisville
ND vs Arkansas

An 8 team playoff would be so much tougher to choose and justify since all the other teams have taken turns losing and beating the others. To me logic would lead me to think the next 4 top contenders would be:

Michigan

Arkansas (if they beat Florida and USC had won out)

WV or Louisville (whichever wasn't already picked in the original 4)

Wisconsin or Boise State (whichever wasn't already picked in the original 4)

8 team Tournament might look like one of these 2:
OSU vs Boise State
Wisconsin vs Louisville
Michigan vs West Virginia
Florida vs USC

OSU vs Wisconsin
ND vs Lousville
Michigan vs West Virginia
Arkansas vs Boise State

Oh well, enough of the dreaming.....we still have to live with the BCS anyway.

Unbelievable, Michigan loses one game to the number one team in the country on the road by 3 pts and you would move Notre Dame who they destroyed in South Bend and Wisconsin whom they also beat and Florida who was truly inspiring against a 1AA bad team, and Lousiville who lost to Rutgers who got embarrased by Cinci, ahead of UM, great logic there.

Under the premise that if a team has already played one of the 4 teams and lost then they already had their playoff game. We are trying to pick the #1 team, not necessarily the best 4. We are trying to match up good teams who haven't had a chance to play the top team yet.

Just a different approach to give teams that didn't get to play the top 1 or 2 teams a shot. If a team has already played them and lost, then they had their shot already and couldn't do it. What is the point of playing again, you just played and lost. How many shots do you want? Best out of 3 or best out 5?

There is no consolation bracket doing it like this. You don't get a second chance to beat a team you already lost to. What would that prove? Even if you won, then they could say you need to play again cause you are 1-1.

Makes some sense to me. But what the hell do I know!

The problems is you are actually rewarding USC for losing to Oregon State, and ND for losing to Michigan and punishing Michigan for losing to the #1 team by 3 pts at their place. Having said that I don't think Michigan should play OSU again, but I definitely don't believe the ND deserves any consideration.
