View Full Version : Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Security Issues

Just a note to everyone who has NOT yet upgraded to 5.5, I STRONGLY suggest not doing so. The new Outlook Express is hackable through e-mail exports and the browser version 5.5 is hackable through open HTML files.
If possible, downgrade to 5.01, or use netscape 6.0.
Also an alternative is available: http://www.opera.com I like that browser more than netscape.
Just a friendly reminder/awareness...

I can't believe you actually are saying bad things about IE! Explain, what are these issues? I have IE 5.5 and have no problems - for your information, I have a ZoneAlarm firewall, which protects my computer from hackers. We'll see... Opera is pretty cool, though, except you can't import bookmarks.

I HATE NETSCAPE WITH PASSION. But if it is a matter of security for my computer I will settle with it.

I can't stand Netscape either!... I mean, it DOESN'T WORK with half the web sites -- you get silly errors and pop-up boxes because of it because someone forgot to end a tag (>), while IE picks it up, but doesn't bother with notifying the user... think about it: why notify the user of the error!? -- s/he can't fix it!!!... Netscape is stupid!... I can't wait 'till MS releases it's Canadian version of MSN Explorer!!... the US version was pretty sweet it was too american for my purposes...

DOWN WITH NETSCAPE! IT IS MOST SENSITIVE BROWSER IEVER USED. I COULDN'T ACCESS MY OWN SITE BECAUSE I MESSED UP ON ONE TAG!

I'll put my vote in for MS IE also.

I like IE, too. I still don't understand why IE and Netscape don't recognize the same CSS and Netscape doesn't recognize Bitmap Images. Although you'd be crazy to put those on your site, I am just saying they should be accepted. If Netscapes trying to be different... its not working for me :).

Yeah. Netscape seems to be too picky with what it accepts.
I had MSN explorer for a week now gone.....it is because like u always have to sign in and sometimes its slow, and when u visit a website the window is a bit too small to see all of it. i'll stick with IE. I hate Netscape too.

Actually, I guess I'm the only one here but I like and use Netscape 4.76 more than Internet Explorer because with its individual bookmarks you can attach little notes to them where I put my usernames and passwords (so I can remember them easier) and I have Internet Explorer 5.00 also and it doesn't let me do that there.

I like Netscape 6. Those themes are pretty cool.

Actually, you can do the same thing in IE. There is a feature in IE 5 (don't know about 4, but you have no business with that awful, out-dated version anyway) called AutoComplete. It remembers passwords and user names for you - and fills them in automatically.
Most people who say Netscape is better say it because they haven't seen better. IE is without a doubt better. Try it and you will see.

90% of the people who use netscape use it because it has the built in composer for email.
The rest of the people who use it, are forced to through schools, because Netscape relies on schools for the vast majority of their usage total.
Netscape 6.0 isn't even equal to IE5 in features. In fact, I'd say it's closer to 4.0, which is pretty sad.

I like the themes still. IE still rocks.

Now I read this after I install IE 5.5! I have the Norton Internet Security program on my computer, does that help? I'm pretty computer-stupid, so help me out here!!;)

Norton should help a good amount, but nothing can help the "pro" hacker, so I guess you're safe.
Welcome, Lauri24! Glad to have you here.
To address your concerns, don't worry too much about hackers because it is extremely rare they will target you. Norton makes great products and assuming you have it setup properly, it should help. Another good, free firewall to protect you from hackers is ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com), which I use and is highly-recommended. Don't worry, though, IE is by far the best browser and you should still be safe. :)

Well Marc i have IE 5 but everytime i go to smallworld or my other e-mails and like qool.com but it NEVER rememebers my username and password. so........
Peck, make sure you have it activated, by going into Tools > Internet Options > Content > AutoComplete and once it is, every form you fill out will prompt you to remember it. Check "yes" to the forms you want it to remember.

IE rocks. Don't try to argue, Netscape will never compare.

I just downloaded Netscape 6, for testing purposes, and I seem to like it...
It's actually not that bad.
I suggest you all give it a try.

I have been trying to tell people that here several times. I like the Modern Theme. It also seems to work alot better than the older versions.
