So what kind of music does everyone like? Who are the best groups/artists ever? What are you currently listening to? Latest album you bought?

I like all music of course, preference = rock.

The Beatles are the best group ever, followed by Floyd and the Who.

Ween is the best band of the last 10 years or so (check 'em out if you don't know)

The latest album I bought was a group called Kings of Leon. They are similar to the Black Crows and kind of like Modest Mouse.

Your turn.

Speaking of hip-hop.

Mos Def, Immortal Technique, and MF Doom are a few you should check out.

Song of the year = "crazy" Gnarles Barkley. Mark my words now, that song will go down as a classic, and kids 30 years from now will still be listening to that song. I promise.

I listen to nearly every genre of music (it comes from years of working at several different radio stations that played a variety of music), but my mother raised my primarily on Motown music.

To this day, I love to listen to the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, Tami Terrell, Mary Wells and Stevie Wonder.

But personally, my all-time favorite artist is Michael Jackson (laugh all you want).

My all-time favorite album is Michael Jackson's "Thriller," while my all-time favorite song is Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."

Like Ellis, I am a huge fan of the Steve Miller Band, plus I love to listen to Elton John (that one's for Sue), Sam Cooke, 2Pac and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Good picks tobynosker.

That's one of the greatest tragedies of the last 50 years of music: Michael Jackson. After all this child molestation stuff, people are beginning to forget and overlook his contributions to music. Thiller is one of the greatest albums of the last 30 years and he changed pop music forever. I'm with ya my man, Michael (musically) was the man.

Not only musically, but Michael Jackson should rank as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) performers and all-around entertainers in history.

He was able to do things on stage that people like James Brown and Sammy Davis Jr. could only dream of.

About the only genre I don't like is country...except for Cash, and he's not really country. Love classic rock of all types (old Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd especially), and some of the newer stuff. Nirvana, Chili Peppers, Radiohead...

Favs are the Cure (duh), NIN, Bowie, D. Mode.
Softer side is Elton, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, George Michael (yeah, yeah, yeah...I don't care what he does/did)
Hiphop is 2Pac, Biggie, Snoop, Eric Sermon... no dirty south crap...Dizzee Rascal (out of the UK) is great.

Yeah, definately true toby.

Anyone want to object to my prediction that "Crazy" will go down as a classic, and still be playing on the radio 30 years from now?

CK, you should dig up and revive a thread called "What are you listening to?"

I am mostly into techno (specifically sub-genres often called downtempo and IDM). Basically, I like music where people look to make listenable, nice melodies without conforming themselves to specific instruments or genres.

My favorite artist of that type is Prefuse 73 (who MF Doom has worked with). I also like Pepe Deluxe, Bluetech, Fila Brazillia, Nightmares on Wax, and others.

I grew up on Classic Rock. I love Pink Floyd, ELO, and Talking Heads (not really classic rock) the most from that era. And Led Zeppelin.

Kevin,
The Talking Heads are great, but often overlooked in terms of good music. Mostly because they were big in the 80s.

It is sad. Thriller is a great album, a landmark of the '80's... it is a shame he's turned into an alien-pedophile-whatever.

I figured I would just let time do that for me...

EDIT: I am still hoping that people will realize that Alanis Morissette's song "Your House" is the greatest song to be recorded since 1995 (although, Matchbox 20's "Push" and Bruce Springsteen's "My City of Ruins" are close).

I think "Crazy" was just a standout pop hit during a year that was dominated by some of the most awful pop music ever made ("Ridin'" by Chamillionaire, "London Bridge" by Fergie, "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake, etc.).

It was catchy, and it is tough to find anybody who doesn't like it, but the same could be said for Outkast's "Hey Ya."

And look how quickly that song has vanished from people's memory in just three years.

Good points. But "Crazy" is unique. It is musically sounds and written by a well respected artist. The song could have come straight out of Motown and the singer has a great voice. "Hey Ya" was a silly pop tune that could have been written by any pop writer in the world. "Crazy" is well written and musically sound, at the same time it is liked by a lot of people, of all ages and all musical back-grounds. It might die off for a few years, but I promise you, you will be hearing it for the rest of your life.

Genres: Rock and country

Artists: AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nirvana, Guns 'N Roses, Johnny Cash, George Strait, Montgomery Gentry, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Allman Brothers Band, Def Leppard, etc.

Modern day country music is **** pretty much. There are some decent new artists but it's either too much like pop or tries to be too over the top redneck.

CKFresh
12-27-2006, 05:11 PM
Alex, I agree with you assesment of modern country. AC/DC is great, one of the first concerts I ever went to, very simply, but sometimes that is best. I'm suprised by how many people really like the Chili Peppers. I like their earlier stuff, but now they are more pop rock than anything. Nirvana is good, over-rated in my opinion, but good. Def Leppard, not so much.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, best guitarist in your book?

Alex
12-27-2006, 05:16 PM
Yep. For a long time I really didn't like SRV much but my friend, who's a huge SRV fan, gave me some of his stuff and I got hooked.

Yeah, the best guitarist ever argument is tough. I definately like Stevie, he's top 3 no doubt. Hard to rule out Clapton and Hendrix though. I go with Hedrix at 1 just because of how much he did in such a short time, while overcoming race issues and playing a right-handed guitar upside down with his left hand. Not to mention he hardly ever played sober, but who does?

I agree with Fresh as far as the Beatles. Best ever. They had a sound like no other. Some of my other favs. Cream, Eric Burdon, The Byrds, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Zeppelin, Stones, War, Pink Floyd, Dire Straights, etc.
Guitarists-Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Buchanan, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, Junior Brown (guitsteel), Chet Atkins,
Segovia, and many others. I may be older, but I think the best music was prior to the 80s.

I feel so out of place here :P

I listen to a lot of metalcore, death metal, heavier stuff. Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, As I Lay Dying, Deadlock, All That Remains, etc.

For more pop type stuff, I'm a Matthew Sweet fan.

More alternative kind of stuff, I love Tori Amos, and Madder Mortem is a heavier band but hard to classify.

I hate most country, and not a fan of much rap/hip hop....although I love Busta Rhymes for his song Dangerous, I still remember the Saturday morning commercial he pulled lyrics from, always makes me smile to hear it :)

Oh, and I don't think anything Allanis Morrisette does should ever be considered in a 'greatest' category :P

Since they have shown up on just about everyone's list, I will no doubt piss some people off, but I must say that The Beatles (while great) are the most overrated "pop" group in the history of music.

They are credited far too much for steering the direction of music over the last forty-plus years, when The Beatles themselves gained most of their musical style from the most influential artist of all-time, Buddy Holly.

The Stones are better the Beatles? I guess you all did inhale... I know it is an old debate... the Stones copied the Beatles at every turn... I enjoy the Stones, but they aren't the Beatles...

As for the Beatles copying Buddy Holly..yes, the Beatles early stuff before Rubber Soul was a copy of what was popular at the time...Buddy Holly was copying Bill Haley and the Comets, and he copied blah, blah, and so forth...

After Rubber Soul, the Beatles went off into their own direction and others followed... The Beatles said at the time that the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds was the album they took from and expanded upon...

The Stones are a good rock band, but never created anything distinct musically... How was it phrased? "Plastic soul, man, plastic soul." I still dig some Paint it Black...that sitar is cool...hmmmm, wonder who put the sitar into popular music?

So what say the rest of you? Beatles or Stones?

Absolyutely right BBP. The Stones are great and their ability to stay together (and alive) this long is amazing. But as far as song-writing and influence, the Beatles are much more important and better than the Stones. The Beatles basically created the idea of a rock'n'roll concept album. The Stones didn't branch out, using other forms of music, until the Beatles did. Like I said somewhere else, when the Beatles incorporate classical you get Elenor Rigby, when the Stones try it you get Ruby Tuesday. No comparison, Beatles win in terms of diversity, quality, and influence. Stones are great, just not the greatest ever like the Beatles.

BBP, you're awesome man! Great points, and I will go further into yours...

Tool - amazing lyrics, even in the weird songs i.e. prison sex...
NIN - Trent Resnor, and the Nihlism will definately be missed. Though the fact he, imo, still puts out great music is a feat most don't accomplish!
The Doors - I still can't believe I was the only one to mention them, and the lyrics Jim Morrison created were amazing aswell as what the other band members came up with! Ever seen the movie? I could imagine Val Kilmer as his unknown son!
The Beatles - Definately some lyrical geniuses, and though they did derive from Buddy Holly's music. It doesn't mean they didn't create their own stature, and formalize music as we know it!
The Stones - Great band, and amazing they've been together for so long!
STP - I think they get the bad ratings from front man Scott Weilands troubles with the needle...
Greenday - Whoever knew that some crackheads and speed freaks could make such interesting music !
The Offspring - Interesting side note, did you know that Dexter Holland was Valedictorian at his high school? Also I think Greg K. their bassist was Salutatorian just behind Dexter!
Incubus - What an amazing band with an excellent array of music! From the thrash tune Vitamin, to the chill dance tune Agoraphobia! Who would have thought you could make a song about that and make it sound peaceful .
Led Zepplin - Would have loved to see these guys go on, but it shows the value of friendship in deciding not to go on after Bonham's death...
Aerosmith - Definately miss the old days...
Rage Against The Machine - Their name said it all, sadly the band members fell away from Zach De LaRocha's views...
The Killers - retro for sure
AC/DC - I like the fact they were able to find new singers that kept the same tune !
The Who - You called it Pete Townshend = glue!
The Almond Brothers - Definately miss Duane...
Audioslave - Not as much Rage...
Pink Floyd - Some very interesting history in this band, and their first stuff with Syd Barrett was quite interesting lol...
Van Halen - Roth was excellent and I'll stand by that comment!

Its hard for me to debate who had the most influence on other groups, or who was the most innovative. I honestly don't know enough about music theory to have that discussion. I am willing to accept that the Beatles had a bigger influence on music and were slightly more innovative. That is what they are known for. I would disagree that the Stones "copied" the Beatles "at every turn". I don't agree with that at all. The Stones had a distinct sound all their own which was much more bluesy, raw and gritty than the Beatles or anyone else.

When I say a band is better it means that I simply like to listen to them a lot more. Its a matter of opinion. Which means, even if they aren't as innovative or shaped the music business as much as the Beatles (and I think they both did those things...you guys can argue who did moreso), but that when I'm tooling around in my basement or driving in my car and I want something to listen to I'm going for the Stones over the Beatles every time. If I had to make a list of my favorite Beatles and Stones songs, I probably wouldn't get to a Beatles song until #10 or #11 on the list. I think they just made better, more enjoyable music. The Beatles were always to pop-py, and bizarre and polished for my tastes. I liked the gritty, real Stones songs with the catchy melodies and Jaggers raw voice piping over it all. It always seemed more interesting to me.

Anyway, I know I'm of the minority opinion in the Stones vs. Beatles argument. Afterall, the Beatles sell 3 records every time the Stones sell one. This is just one man's musical tastes.

Completely understandable. Nothing wrong with having preference. My thing is that for ME the Stones seem to be fairly limited in their music. I love the Stones' songs, but after a while I begin to feel like I am listening to the same thing over and over. Not so with the Beatles. Put on Helter Skelter and then list to I Will. They were SO diverse it is scary. In addition, it seems to me that song writers (meaning anyone who has ever attempted to write a song, good or bad) tend to appreciate the Beatles more than the Stones. I am a musician and have tried to write songs. Let me tell you, every time I am done the songs sounds just like the last song I tried to write. It is so incredible hard to write in different styles and do it so well. Finally, the Beatles, in my opinion, are much more musical.. While Mic Jagger has a great voice and is a great front man, his voice leaves the Stones limited yet again. He isn't able to do the soft, sweet, harmonic music that the Beatles were good at. On the otherside, the Beatles could do that style and then come out with a song like Come Together, which easily could have been a Stones song.

I guess my point is, the Beatles could do anything the Stones did ( aside from staying together for a century) yet the Stones could NOT do all that the Beatles could.

But once again, there is nothing wrong with preference. The Stones are one of the best bands ever. If I seem harsh on them, it's only because we are comparing them to the Beatles, and in my opinion, no one is even close to the Beatles.

man...i really wish i would have joined this conversation sooner! better late than never. top 10 greatest albums ever:

1) radiohead - ok computer *this is the greatest album ever written. i don't care what you say. on a whole, there simply hasn't been a greater masterpiece.

2) sex pistols – nevermind the bullocks... *arguably the most influential album of all time. depends on your musical tastes, but one band took a small scene and revived rock music forever.

3) bright eyes - lifted *i don't care what you think about the guy, this album is simply a reincarnation of bob dylan. amazing lyrics, amazing melodies, amazing moods. best album of our generation.

4) nirvana - nevermind *another extremely influential album. you might think these guys saved rock. of course, kurt cobain cites the sex pistols as an influence.

5) death cab for cutie - we have the facts and we're voting yes *this band used to be good. i promise. i know they're simply horrible now. but back in 2000 they were pretty f'ing good.

6) fiona apple - tidal *no, i am not gay. i just appreciate GOOD music. and at 19 years old, this chick was obviously a prodigy. maybe i pay attention to different things, but the lyric sheet is a literary work of art in itself.

7) sunny day real estate - diary *i like what USED TO be called emo. of course that was 12 years ago before MTV and the radio molested it. but if you hate it, then you have this album to blame.

8) pavement - terror twilight *i don't know. i just really love pavement.

9) alkaline trio - From Here To Infirmary (japanese release because it has "hell yes") *this band does pop-punk (i hate saying that) too well for their own good. and they have a dark side that's just too intriguing. i can't help but be drawn to a band that would say things like "What's upside down? What's coated in silver? This crucifix is my four leaf clover" hahahahahahaha

10) built to spill - keep it like a secret *it's just so soothing and catchy, man.

that's just my opinion at this point in time. i'll probably remember 15 others i should have put up there. but i'll always stick to #1 and #2. i'm sure....others will vary greatly...

Great selection, and one of the most underrated albums of the last ten years.

Fiona Apple is still making great music.

I like some of your choices... I don't know if any of them would be in a personal top ten list... I lean towards jazz most of the time... Here are the ones from your list that I like..

radiohead - ok computer - I enjoy Radiohead...the recent solo work of Thom Yorke is good as well..

nirvana - nevermind - I am glad they came along in the early 90's, music was in a dire need of a change... someone like them is needed again..

fiona apple - tidal - She is very talented, I would suggest picking up her other albums as well...she is soulful, intelligent and funny...

Top 10 Album List

1. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis - Smooth, soulful jazz... this album emotes more than any album I have ever listened to...
2. Straight No Chaser - Thelonious Monk - Hard bop genius, he is symetrical and erratic at the same time, he deserved to be on Time magazine for this..
3. Revolver - The Beatles - The first album that Beatles decide to break down all barriers and go for it...
4. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys - Brian Wilson was finally let go and the result is beautiful, too bad he couldn't keep it together to make more of these...
5. Yoshmi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips - This concept album will blow you away, the vocal have resonance, the music is post modern mix..
6. Master of Puppets - Metallica - Driving beats, fast metal, scorching harsh melodies, this album rocks...
7. New World Symphony - Dvorak - Powerful
8. Giant Steps - John Coltrane - in his prime, it is fascinating where he takes a simple tune...
9. Are You Experienced/Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix Experience - Blues, rock, psychadelic... there will never be another...
10. *****es Brew - Miles Davis - The real birth of fusion(rock influenced jazz), this album is a trip, you don't even need drugs *L*

If I thought about this list tomorrow, I am sure it would change...but these are the 10 that come to mind today...

Call me crazy but I thought the Sex Pistols were the start of "punk" rock? Good none the less, I just thought they started the whole madness, which anyone should enjoy! If you haven't already seen SLC Punk, it's a must watch lol...

Fiona Apple is excellent, I wouldn't call you gay for stating the fact! "Fast as you can" is one of my favorite songs!

Radiohead I never could get into, just not the music I'm into I guess... Though they've had a few good songs.

Have any of you ever heard of a band called "Kidney Thieves"? Very interesting music, a chick singer with a great voice, and the guy to do all the music I think... Also the Dresden Dolls? Very interesting and sometimes funny lyrics, also a chick singer playing the piano, and her boy toy playing the drums. (They opened for NIN the first time I saw them at the Fillmore in Denver.)

The video was to the song "Criminal"... the video fits the song like a glove... a screwed up girl that like to ***** with a good man's brain...

She could use a few extra meals... too skinny...

I liked the earlier Metallica albums more than the newer stuff.. it went downhill, especially after the black album...

you're half right. punk was, in all reality, started in the early 70's with the new york dolls. malcolm mclaren saw them in new york and went back to london hoping to start a similar madness. he happened upon johnny rotten, who made it into what it became, as mclaren made it into the media circus that basically spawned an entire movement. johnny rotten wanted it to be about being an individual, but obviously it became a group-mentality like any other scene. rotten says that his music got obsorbed by the "****stem." (i hope i don't get a warning for that : /) of course the early 80's in america spawned a whole different, larger and now more branched out movement of punk.

my senior thesis was on the history of punk rock ; )

I consider the black album the first of the crap from Metallica. It was noticably different in style, I think it was a sort of test-run to see how they could do if they tried a more marketable music. Don't know if you ever listened to Testament, they started around the same time as Metallica, in the same genre of music; unlike Metallica, they went the opposite way, and got heavier. One of the few bands I think actually improved as they got older.

I have it downloaded too, but I have yet to listen to it.

I have to say that "Eminem Presents The Re-Up" is one of the most disappointing albums to come out in a long while.

The only decent track is Eminem's "No Apologies."

In my mind I'm a fighter
My heart's a lighter
My soul is the fluid
My flow sparks it right up
An arsenic writer
Author with arthritis
Carpel tunnel
Marshall will start ****t-itis

Hard headed and hot headed
Bull headed and pig headed
Dick headed, a prick
A big headache, I'm sick
Quick witted, for every lyic spitted
There are six critics who wait for me to slip with it
So quick, this dynamite stick buried the wick
And it's going to explode any minute
Some lunatic lit it
And it's not Nelly
Do not tell me to stop yelling
When I stop selling I quit
So stop dwelling
And I am not failing

You ****ers are not ready
Because I got jelly
Like Beyonce's pot belly
This is Destiny
Yes money, I'm off running
So get off me
I'm not slowing or softening...

...My head hits the pillow
A weeping willow
I can't sleep
A pain so deep it bellows
But these cellos help just to keep me mellow
Hands on my head touched knees to elbow

I'm hunched over
Emotion just flows over
These cold shoulders are both frozen
You don't know me

I keep saying it and I can't stress it enough
So keep playing it and stand next to the subs
I choke mics like asphyxiation
When I'm strangling my own throat masturbating

**** yeah I'm a basket case
And I mastered this rap **** until my ass gets wasted
Until my assassination
Until I'm slain because of some ***'s infatuation

.44 mags a fascination
A taste for disaster and if that's the case then...

...This song isn't for you, it's for me
A true MC
It's what it do just to see if he still has it
And if his skills mastered
He's able to spill raps long after his killed

That's a real MC
Got you feeling me
Whether willing or unwillingly, you still agree
As long as there's still this hunger and will in me
Than expect a longer life expectancy

I'd be a savage beast if I didn't have this outlet to salvage me
Inside, I'd be exploding, soaked in self loathing
And mourning, so I'm warning you, don't coax me

It's silly, I'm really a sheep in wolf's clothing
Who only reacts when he gets pushed
Don't be fooled, the press blows up this whole thing

It's stupid, they don't know because they don't see that I'm wounded
All they did was ballooned it
I'm sick of talking about these tattoos, cartoon did
That's why I tuned it out
I'm sick of duking
And they can suck my dick while I'm pucking

How about the Stooges(Iggy Pop)? Weren't they one of the founders of Punk as well?

bearsr4real
01-05-2007, 02:06 PM
as usual, pup, you're on the ball. yes, iggy and the stooges were certainly an influence, but the "creation" of punk is normally attributed to the sex pistols or (gag) the ramones. if you actually listen to the music and also look at their clothing style, the new york dolls are unarguably the founders of the punk movement. unfortunately, what is now considered modern punk is the most horrible music ever in existence. you can blame california for that one. however, punk continues to evolve and only needs one more good stint underground to create something powerful and meaningful again. that's just my opinion.

BBP, Stooges yes, but I have to agree with bears about the sex pistols, and the ramones. I still really enjoy Pennywise, that's some good punk imo! MXPX wasn't too bad with their early stuff, either. Blink182 was great but quickly faded after enima of the state.

Any of you like finger eleven? I enjoy their melodic rock, with the spalsh of good lyrics.

I'd like to get into some of my favorite songs!

1. Sleep now in the fire - RATM
2. Gotta get away - The Offspring
3. Science - SOAD
4. Megalomaniac - Incubus
5. Opiate - Tool

Some very good songs on the top of my list! All so very influential in my life :).
