The North Carolina Senate apologized Thursday for the Legislature's role in promoting slavery and Jim Crow laws that denied basic human rights to the state's black citizens.
Following the lead of lawmakers in neighboring Virginia, the Senate unanimously backed a resolution acknowledging its "profound contrition for the official acts that sanctioned and perpetuated the denial of basic human rights and dignity to fellow humans."

Good idea? Why rehash the past?

I have honestly never understood the point behind doing this and what it is meant to accomplish. I mean it is not as though those who are in power today had any direct involvement in purveying slavery or the Jim Crow laws. It is kind of like when your parents apologize to someone for something you did. I mean as far as I know the NAACP is not going around banging on representative's and senator's doors demanding an apology for slavery and Jim Crow laws.

These apologies are so silly. Nobody in today's legislature had anything to do with slavery back in the day.
Get over it. It's a done deal.
The blacks were treated awfully. I just got through reading the book "Amazing Grace" concerning William Wilberforce's efforts to end England's slave trading. Which he finally accomplished.
So many slaves died an agonzing death on the slave ships and in the West Indies.
But from my reading of history the poor Irish have been treated worse than any race I know of. Millions killed through the centuries by British and the Vikings.
Also when the Irish came to America they were treated worse than blacks at times. Especially in New York. I guess New York owes them an apology. NAH!
I guess Norway, Sweden and Denmark needs to apologize. Nah!
Also how about the American Indians? Slaughtered by the many thousands if not millions. They weren't enslaved just killed.
Lets move ahead and get our heads out of the past.
I was abused as a kid-I'm over it. I can't hold on to it forever-unless I want a miserable life.
