This ought to be intereting... which hockey team do you hate most? Say you're a Miami Heat fan, who is your New York Knicks of the NHL? Which team do you fiercly abhor?

LOL. I dislike the Islanders. Theyre the local team but just were very stupid last few years. Also their arena has toxic waste underneath it......
GO RANGERS!

Well i hate the Flames (who is the Oiler's rival) and the stars.

...I'd have to say the Detroit Red Wings. The Winnipeg Jets and the Red Wings started a rivalry in their last few seasons in Manitoba -- that's one reason I hate them. Another reason is that I only starting liking hockey around 1994 or so, and that's when Detroit was building up a pretty powerful team and I hated them soo much 'cuz they were always beating the teams that I had the chance to watch (Toronto was always on the tube, and Winnipeg, of course)....

this is how much I hate Detroit: when I was shopping for a hockey jersey, I wasn't too happy to try on the Red Wings jersey just to see what size I was looking for :(

You've obviously never really watched hockey before.... you're like one of my friends: he always says, "I went to a boxing match, and a hockey game broke out!"

You can you hate hockey!?... These guys play on a near frictionless surface... in basketball or track or football, you have shoes with kleets and extra good gripping; shoes with springs in them to make you jump higher and cusion your landing.

To add to it, you have the bone-crunching hits of football, the intensity of any other sport, and it's faster than any other team sport on the planet... slap shots at over 100 MPH... players can do a lap of the rink, which totals to over 325 feet, in 14 seconds... you can you NOT like hockey?

I can not like Hockey... in fact, I DO not like hockey! lol

I hate it because it is boring. The NHL relies on fights to keep its fan base. And I think it sucks when you watch a game for two hours to see a tie game, or a one to nothing score. Why do you think Americans hate soccer? We need to see some action to keep us interested.

OMG you've obviously never watched a game before.

The "real" hockey fans DIE for close 2-1 or 1-0 games... the NHL is trying to cut down on fighting because of the sterotype its received from the American market that it, very pathetically, is trying to appeal to.

Actually, I usually prefer high scoring hockey games... did you see the 5-2 Toronto vs. Montreal game last night?... It was AWESOME... lots of playmaking, shots on goal, A LOT of hard bodychecks, and good intensity even though it was a 3-goal descision.

I don't mind the close games as long as the teams aren't playing a New Jersey-type style of game where it's strictly defense.... I only like them if it's there's lots of offensive chances and spectacular saves.

I never use to like tied games either, but the new 4-on-4 overtime format is awesome -- the other day there was nothing but back-and-forth hockey in overtime... there was NO CONCERN for defense whatsoever... it was completely offense... sweet deal.

Well, I am not a die hard hockey fan. Why do I have to like hockey? You nor anybody is going to make me sit down and waste a night watching people skate. And I cant stand how ESPN and all other sports networks try to shove it down our throughts. AMERICANS WILL NEVER LIKE HOCKEY OR SOCCER. In America, it is not always 30 degrees outside so we can actually play sports like football, baseball, and basketball. We dont have to relay on skating on ponds, no offence Lee. Hockey is and will always be strictly Canadian. By the way, we dont have trouble with counting. We just have jacka$$es like Al Gore that never let it stop.

I started making some popcorn, grabbed a pop, and laid back in my recliner when ESPN announced the game would be on ESPN 2. In the bowl game's place, would be an exciting (and I say exciting sarcastically) hockey game. Hockey? I don't get ESPN 2, so I am stuck with hockey? This is America, not Canada. Why is hockey on instead of football? They really missed the boat on that one.

I recently e-mailed you (through the SC article feedback form) about this particular paragraph in your recent article, Rick... but I'll say what I said to you to everyone else here as well.

We all up here in Canada have been trying to tell the NHL commissioner that no one CARES for hockey down there in Florida or California or Texas... so thank you for finally confirming that you guys don't like it either... the NHL is stupid for trying to expand their market down there.

...however, I think you should still suffer by bumping into a few hockey games every now and then on ESPN if I have to suffer through your college football and basketball games on my Canadian sport networks, TSN and CTV SportsNet.

Guys, let's not lower ourselves to profane language or flaming. Not everyone is going to like hockey, the same can be said about football or anything other sport. Let's leave it at that.

Yeah. Just seems Americans don't like hockey or soccer as much though. Especially in certain areas. Here in NY though people follow hockey pretty much. Go Rangers!

Yes. Especially Yankee fans. Most of which are just following the crowd. In my school half are Yankee fans, a quarter are Mets fans, and another quarter are other teams.

Well, as a non-Canadian who loves hockey, I'll stay out of the fray and just answer the question the thread is about.

Flyers. I hate the Flyers. I hate everything about them.

I did! That was really, really funny. John Candy was a really funny guy, its a shame he died so early.

Ifroggy, I know you have been a Yankee fan for a long time. I am talking about other people who just liked them recently once they started winning again.

Yes, Wedge, I understand. I know plenty of people like that. But, for me, its time to really enjoy this, because the last time we won before 1996 was 1978, before I was born, so who knows when we could go into another drought, better enjoy this while it lasts, which I hope it lasts forever. :)

The Sens! I haaaate them.. partly because I hate Yashin, partly because of the whole BarrASSo thing, partly because of the rivalry started in the playoffs between them and the Leafs, and partly because I've had too many bad experiences with their whiny fans. (I'm not labeling them all like that; just really bad experiences) I also dislike the Flyers, but since Lindros is gone I don't despise them quite as much.

As a Leafs fan you'd expect me to hate the Habs. But they're cool. (I probably wouldn't think that a couple decades ago though)

first of all, welcome to Sports Central, meshie!

We're quite opposite, however -- The Sens are my favorite team, but I agree with you for the Ya$hin part... I can't wait 'till his contract really expires this year!!!

I used to despise the flyers but no so much anmyore too. My aunt used to live in Philadelphia and when the Rangers and Flyers played she would brag after the Flyers won. Plus Lindross wasn't really such a nice guy. Now, I dont really find too much wrong with hockey except I've heard alot about Yashin.

Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

The Sens have a great team this year.. (it kills me to say that!) I pretty much root for all the Canadian teams, except the Sens. I don't know what it is about them.. if they were in the basement like the Habs, maybe I wouldn't hate them as much. It's probably just the fact that my Leafers have to share a division with them, and I get constant reminders from "friends" that they're on top, and that they're better than the Leafs, and that Lalime is better than Cujo, etc. (hmpht. "Friends".)

...I don't think the Sens are better... in fact, if you read my NHL preview series that was in the sports-central.org NHL section in October, I predicted the Maple Leafs to make the finals!... definitely, the Leafs have more talent in every position, I think, but the Sens are playing great and getting some unbelieveable goaltending from some faboulous young netminders.

Leafs are still better, though!

The NHL is trying to cut down on fighting because of the sterotype its received from the American market that it, very pathetically, is trying to appeal to.

If they are trying to cut down on fights as you say they are, then why dont the refs try to stop the fights. I was watching Sportscenter today and I say some Kings player get laid out. Why didnt the refs try to stop that. However I will give you one thing Lee, at least hockey playesr know how to fight. I think it is hilarious when you see baseball and basketball players trying to fight. Those guys punch like crippled women!

(Rick, I think you goofed up with your multiple posts. From now on, use the edit icon to fix your errors. And nice try quoting something Lee didn't say... :))

quote something I didn't say???

...was that the one-hit fight (well two: guy got hit, then he hit the ice)???

As a certified CHA (Canadian Hockey Assosiation) official, you can only break up a fight if both linsemen are there and have talked which guy they are going to take... you can't have just one guy go in there because you are suspose to tie up their arms first of all, so if only one guy's arms are tied up, the other guy is still punching.... so maybe in the game you saw, the linesmen weren't both there and ready (referees shouldn't break up fights)

also, when they're going full swing, you don't stop them... you usually wait until they're tired so you don't get hammered as an official... they won't keep on fighting forever... they can decide on their own when it's done, or else when one guy has clearly lost and is out of it!!!

M. James: Calm down? To what? Dead? Is this not a board to express one's thoughts and feelings? More are hurt on the ice than anyone on this board. I agree with Lee. If Americans don't like hockey, why should they be forced to watch it? Let Canada be home again. We at least know, more or less, what its all about.

Rick Dogg
01-20-2001, 06:19 PM
Yeah I agree. Its not like anyone goes home and cries themselves to sleep because someone disagrees with them on a web site. I think that arguments keep not only these boards fresh and fun, but sports alltogether.

Marc
01-20-2001, 07:05 PM
Guys, I said calm down because mainly there is no place for posting profane things on these boards, not because I thought the debate was getting out of control. I, for one, am all for some good arguments, as long as they stay under control.
