View Full Version : Crazy U.S. Presidential Election

Wow, this is nuts about what's going on with the Presidential election. Who knew that the state of Florida would be at the center of what's really capturing the imagination of the rest of the country.
And I thought Florida was just a good breeding ground for college football players (with Miami, Florida State and the University of Florida). :)
I'm glad someone finally brought this up, couldn't have come at a better time.
As I understand, if Bush wins Florida, he is our next president. If Gore somehow wins Florida after the recount and absentee balets are counted, he is the next president. This is a truly remarkable election, one of the closest and most interesting ever.
I don't know about you guys, but I am for Bush. Bush, Bush, Bush! :D
BTW, did any of you see that commercial, forget who it is for, where it mocks Bush and Gore?
Bush: "I'm wearing my dad's pants." Gore: "Well, I invented pants." :)

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Bush didn't win the Presidency after the recount because he's up by 1,800 votes at the first final tally before the recount and I don't think a recount, while it might be enough to narrow the gap of Bush's lead over Gore wouldn't be enough to overcome as much as 1,800 votes. And as I understand it, those overseas absentee ballots are probably mostly military personnel who for the most part will vote for Bush anyways.

Hehe, yeah that's a pretty good one. Yeah, I seem to remember a commercial like that. I think that might have been a Pat Buchanan commercial.

That's just another one of those absurd rumors - another one that isn't true is that he was rumored to be a druggy back in the '70's.
Let me tell you this: if he was against blacks, I doubt he would be winning the election...

No, he's not a racist.
Like, Marc said you can't be against blacks and win - but you can be privately against blacks and win. lol j/k :D
But, no, Bush is not against blacks - at least I don't think so.

What he probably heard is that almost all blacks voted for Gore. In some areas, over 90% in fact. Blacks tend to vote democrat - just the way it is. The democrats target those kinds of voters.
I am a major Bush supporter and am convinced he has won. The recount is unlikely to change any results, and the absentees are likely to make up for any votes he might lose over all the legal disputes.
And yes, this is the closest Presidential election EVER...a lot of people say "one of the closest", but it's numero uno for sure.
Welcome TWTCommish! Are you sure this is the closest ever? I won't dispute that this is one of the most exciting and closest in recent history, but BY ONE VOTE John Quincy Adams became President in a deadlock between himself and Andrew Jackson in 1824, making that the closest ever. :)

Andrew Jackson - now that was a racist!
Not sure about Adams... but at that time too, too many people were slave owners or had different ideas then the truth.

I don't believe Adams truly did. This one if the closest in popular vote, and if Bush wins Florida, it will be the closest in electoral, barring bizzare elections, like the one in which R. Hayes won through some pretty shady practices.
We could know the new President as early as tonight, or as late as a few weeks. Right now, the Florida recount is 94% completed and Bush only leads by some 400 votes. *nervous*

The Florida organization that handles all this has voted 3-0 to re-count after this recount...this time manually (by hand, basically). I expect Bush will win this recount, and the manual one, and things will start to calm down.
Not with all the lawsuits that are going to be filed by Gore and company... they will likely ask for a recount in other states closely won by Bush, or vice-versa if Gore whens Florida.
(Keep this thread going guys, we're a few posts from our first hot topic!)

I am really pulling for Gore. Patrick, i too like the snickers commercial. :)

Ugh, Gore is known for scare tactics, and it's the only reason this election is so close. Not to mention the fact that some people are actually so quick to make judgements that they think George W. Bush is stupid because he has trouble pronouncing a few words...sheesh.
Bottom line: you can't be an idiot and run for President. Bush is in-articulate, but Gore is a known liar and flip-flops on issues constantly. The list is a freakin' mile long!
Take your choice: inarticulate, or a chronic liar. The choice is clear, and that's why the American people have elected Bush, as we will see. There is talk of Gore getting recounts in Missouri and another state or two, but Bush is likely to take Iowa, and it's still up in the air in Washington thanks to the absentees.

I'm Canadian, so I have a question to ask all you Americans. How can the ballots in Florida only be screwed up?... I heard they were "confusing" in some areas, so some people wanted a re-vote.
Now, tell me this: Should the ballots not be the same in all the states!?... Why were they screwed up only in Florida!?
I ask this, because, I mean, it just makes sense that they should be the same nation-wide. If any country has a right to screw up their ballots for their national election, it's CANADA, because... well.. it's a different system so it's hard to describe to people who've never heard of it before, but we don't vote directly for the Prime Minister -- we vote for representatives of political parties in 301 regions, or "constituencies," across the country, so the ballot is the different in each constituency.

Lee, that's the question everyone wants to know! Apparently, a bunch of Gore supporters down in a south Florida county are complaining their ballots, which were different than every other counties, and many claim it caused them to vote for Buchanan instead of Gore. Every county in Florida has sent in the recount totals, except for this county, which is still up in the air.

Basically, that guy from Palm Beach county, or whatever country it is, is one of the biggest jerks I have seen on TV in awhile. I am getting sick of the whining.
Also, Gore needs to back off from the law suits and legal action - if he is planning to take any action.
According to reports today, the Bush campaign is going to court to try to stop the manual recount in Palm Beach county, because that county is heavily Democratic and they fear it could give Gore the state.
No matter what, I would expect recount in other states, too, no matter who wins Florida.

Before I start, I'd rather see Bush in office (lesser of two idiots IMHO). But that's not the issue here ...
Personally, I think it's really cool that we get to witness history like this ... but it should have never happened. And now I'm getting sick of this lawsuit stuff that's about to happen. It's getting out of hand.
On top of that, I need to get something off my back. Please people ... STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE. I'm not saying it's you guys in general, but people all over this country. Yeah, maybe it's unfair (and I don't like it either), but it's the LAW here in America. There's nothing that you can do about it this election. So stop complaining about it.
Man the election is getting hot and so is this thread!!! Also did u see a video made by a TV station in Wisconsin and some democrats were giving cigars for free to homeless people so they can cast a vote on Gore!!!!!! Now thats total bribery!!!
Yeah, I heard about that, Peck! Reminds me of a recent story I read where the two fictional politions were handing out free money to citizens to vote for them. I guess these guys will do anything to win. And now, both of the candidates site's have been hacked of somesort recently. Wow. This thread lives on... :D

...I found this ironic. As you said, Marc, "...the Bush campaign is going to court to try to stop the manual recount in Palm Beach county, because that county is heavily Democratic and they fear it could give Gore the state.
Okay, now get this: Bush is wanting a recount in some other states where the results were close between him and Gore!!!... I'm not sure if it's "manual recount" or not, but still, it's a recount!... funny, I thought!
On well if u going to count so many states might as well recount the whole country!!! And although i ain't a Gore supporter in West Palm Beach county in votes there were a confusion on where to punch the hole for gore some voted for Nalph or something because of it so what are they going to do????????????/
And so the election continues... who would have thought? Whoever wins will win by the courts - this is truly a black spot on our nation's history.

:) ...well, since you gave me another opportunity, I just thought I'd rub it in some more that we in Canada finished our election in six hours. By my count, you guys down there have now taken over seven hundred (700) hours.

Looks like Gore lost both Florida Supreme Court requests yesterday. They did not order immediate recounts, and they said that the butterfly ballot was constitutional and did not require a new election.
I wonder if the US Supreme Court will tell us anything today or if we'll have to wait till Monday.
It's kind of ironic how Gore's lawyers who are going to court to try to prove the ballets were too confusing with no evidence is going to hurt them more than help them.

Wow! For some reason, I thought the US Supreme Court would rule against Bush. I'm glad I was wrong. Does anybody know how long the Florida Supreme Court has to respond to the US Supreme Court?

Wow again! I can't believe the US Supreme Court gave Bush his stay. I wonder how the will rule on the appeal. That Florida Supreme Court keeps surprising me.
