Hey,

With one of the biggest Amateur tournaments on right now, I was interested to know if anyone is familiar with the big names.

It's pretty exciting for me (and Bermuda) because of one our local golfers is making quite a name for himself. He, Michael Sims, was part of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association when I was there (maybe about 5 years ago) since then he has gone on to play college golf and has managed to win some amateur tournaments.

Recently he defeated Bryce Molder, the top-ranked amateur in the US at the North and South Amateur Championship. He is played in the 101st US Amateur and I don't think play has finished (or maybe they haven't updated their site) but I believe he is 4 -5 under for the first two days and the leader is at 8 under. Now they will finish the tournament in match play format. This is the first time that one of our local players is gaining international recognition. Alot of our younger players (15 - 18) are located at prestigious golf academies throughout the U.S (David Leadbetter / Hilton Head) but are too young to have accomplished much on an international level.

Does anyone have any interesting stories or know any aspiring amateurs from your community?

Can't say I'm familiar with the amateur game nor the up-and-coming players, but I can say it's great to hear there's so much talent out there. The future of the game is not in jeopardy.

I was watcing some show on MSNBC the other night and they showed some talented, young golfers and interviewed them. I was very impressed by the look of their swings and love of the game at such a young age.

Now, are we talking about the US Amateur or the US Junior Amateur, because can't, 20- or 30-year olds play in the US Amateur????

Anyways, is Ty Tryon in this event or no??... He's too "good" for it now! :D ....he's my new hero -- 17 years old and turning pro next month!!!

My main sports stations aren't showing this tournament's highlights, though.... guess I hafta goto TheGolfChannel!

....second thought.......... just looking at the USGA's web site -- the US Junior Am is already over, so I suppose we're talking about the US Am........ intesting note -- a Canadian finished second at the US Junior Amateur!!!.... very cool.... unfortunately, Richard Scott probably won't be able to try and go for another try next year 'cuz he's 17 this past year -- 18 next year :( .

Yes Lee, I was talking about the US Amateur :). I'm not sure if there are any age restrictions but the players I am talking to are university/college age students. One of the articles :

ESPN will be showing parts of the US Amateur today.

Today is the US Amateur final match-up... I believe it is ABC carrying it on TV this afternoon... ABC or NBC... I forget... either way, I plan to sneak it into my VERY hectic Sunday schedule ;)

Yep -- play golf and watch the PGA Tour on TV... later on, catch the Little League World Series final, and, hopefully, sneak in some US Amateur coverage in there... like I said -- very hectic :D
