Okay, this has probably been discussed before somewhere because it really only took me 5 minutes to come up with this but here's my simple proposal for a National Championship playoff in Division I College Football.
You keep the B.C.S. standings (or change it like FinHeavenAJ suggested to something that will list the Top 8 teams in the country) and take the top 8 teams in the final B.C.S. standings (this can be expanded in later years depending on how much more games the people in charge of college football would be willing to have) and place them all in a playoff tournament. And have #8 in the B.C.S. play #1. #7 play #2, #6 play #3, and #5 play #4 in the first round.
Take all the major bowls in the B.C.S. right now. You take the Fiesta Bowl. You take the Orange Bowl. You take the Rose Bowl. You take the Sugar Bowl. And you take 3 other minor bowls (which you can alternate with other different Division I bowls each year as far as who participates in this tournament) to set up your playoff.
The first round of the playoffs (with the 8 teams) are hosted by the 3 minor bowls and one of the major B.C.S. bowls (Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange which can alternate each year as to which of these major bowls gets stuck with a first round game).
The 2nd round of the playoffs (with 4 teams) are hosted by 2 Bowls from the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange.
And the Championship Game can be like before with each of the above mentioned 4 major bowls taking turns each year to host the game.
So here you keep most of the major bowl games intact and it adds at most only 2 more games to the two team's that will eventually end up in the Championship Game.
