View Full Version : First real week of College Football

So no major upsets today in the first real Saturday of College Football.
But how about Oregon getting a close call from Wisconsin up at Eugene? Oregon gave up 28 points, certainly not changing the reputation of the Pac-10 as a conference with soft defensive teams.
And also how about U.C.L.A. opening up with a big road win at Alabama. I thought that was impressive because even though the Crimson Tide are lower ranked than the Bruins, Tuscaloosa is still a tough place to play.
I thought Colorado trouncing Colorado St. was a relative upset.
I thought the Wisconsin-Oregon game was fabulous, it made me miss living on the West Coast and getting to see Pac-10 shootouts each week.
A pretty good week, but I am already starting to get pumped for the Michigan-Washington game in Seattle next week.
Unfortunately, no real surprises...
How about Lee Suggs, the Virginia Tech tailback who led the nation in scoring last season, injuring his left knee in the third quarter of the ninth-ranked Hokies' 52-10 victory over Connecticut on Saturday? That really puts a dent into the Vick-less Hokies, who still looked good.
In other news, I payed $11.95 to order Kentucky vs. Louisville and saw them lose 36-10. :(
In a funny note I heard while watching the game, a Kentucky fan payed to have a big banner fly above the stadium saying "Trader Rick", as in Rick Pitino. You don't want to miss Kentucky/Louisville in basketball this year. We'll get our revenge - big time. And another fact, the team who has won the football matchup has lost every single basketball matchup since the rivalry started.
Observations from week 1:
1. UCLA is for real. Their D looked very, very good against a solid Alabama team.
2. Oregon needs to stop playing Wisconsin. Wis plays them tough every time. This shouldn't hurt Oregon's title hopes at all, though. At least they were playing someone of talent. (Nebraska=Troy State, c'mon)
3. Lee Suggs loss means that the Hokies will struggle and may not even finish 2nd in the big east. West Virginia didn't look impressive getting routed by BC, either.
4. Joe Paterno may be done as a coach. With Adam Taliaferro leading the team out, PSU could have at least held Miami under 30 first half points. Miami truly looked unstoppable, but I'd like to see them battle FSU or Florida...or even a team like Georgia Tech. The Big East gives them a real easy conference schedule.
Too bad CSU lost. Their new AD used to be my neighbor.

As far as I said about no upsets this week, well don't look now but espn.com's scoreboard says Fresno State 24, Oregon State 10 with about 4 minutes left in 3rd Quarter.
Just what the Pac-10 needs. :(

Hey Nate. Better hope Nebraska doesn't beat them too bad next week or they'll be real mad for that game with you guys, heh.

Yup, can't wait for that also. I like Rick Neuheisel too. I think he's one of the best coaches in College Football.
But I also can't wait for Notre Dame at Nebraska. One of the few times I'll actually be rooting for the Fighting Irish.

Ouch. Sorry to hear it, Marc. $11.95 is a full tank of gas for my car. Well almost a full tank. :)

Nice stat.
