Well, it's that time of year!!
Tie up your laces and hit the ice, beause the members of the Sports Central Message Boards have the opportunity to face-off against their peers in a full-length fantasy hockey season.
As of now, CBS Sportsline and SC's fantasy affiliate, FantasyTeam, have yet to open their games, despite being just 17 days away from the start of the NHL's regular season! Therefore, I have determined that as the one iniating this league, I would prefer to use Yahoo!, as they have many different options.
I think most of us have used Y! a lot and know what it has to offer in other sports -- the SCMB uses it for its fantasy baseball league -- and it offers the same features in hockey.
We need to get this going soon, so reply to this if you are interested and suggest your opinion as to whether you want a Fantasy Point league, a Head-To-Head league, or a Rotisserie league.
Who's interested?

I'm in.
I think we should use a roto format.
I'm definately NOT in. :D
Can't say I'd be in because I have no knowledge or even interest in hockey - very rarely do I have interest. :D
This is still a good idea, Lee, I recommend contacting a bunch of the NHL board posters over the last month and I'm sure you'll get some of them to play.
I hope we get good participation out of this.
I'm in.
Edit: IMO, roto format would be the best.

...but you are all leaning towards the roto format!?... blah!... Well, I'll give the public what they want, but I am really into this head-to-head thing now that the SCMB f-ball league is using it!!! :)

I guess I'll give it a shot. Even though I don't follow the NHL, I know a bit...

You provide the details and The Ice Jacksonians are in. You might have to excuse some of my hockey igorance, though.

Y! F-Hockey URL: http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey
League Name: SCMB Members League
League ID#: 4622
League Password: scboards
League Size: 10 teams
Draft Type: LIVE Draft
Draft Day: Tuesday, September 25 @ ... 3:25 PM PT ... 4:25 PM MT ... 5:25 PM CT ... 6:25 PM ET
Roster Size: 17 players
League Type: Rotisserie
League Settings (debatable): http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/show?page=leaguesettings&lid=4622
Sorry, guys, for the odd timing of the draft, but the only times available to do the draft on a Saturday or Sunday or Friday was "Early AM"... unless we leave it until October 6, at which point the season has already started. If you can make the Live Draft, great... if not, be sure to edit your "pre rankings" (link for that is available on your team/roster page once you join the league).
If you don't like some of the league settings, or think we should change the league type even to a head-to-head or fantasy points league, be sure to discuss it here prior to the start of the season.

I thought you could only use the H2H format for football? If we can use it in hockey, I change my vote from roto to H2H.

I have NO CLUE who that last one is... anyone?

UA Ice Bears -- Nick -- NickHammy

Boston Blackhawks -- Sean -- korn9728
Godsmack Rules -- Aaron -- k9killa

The Ice Jacksonians -- ??? -- Jackson
(sorry, I don't know everyone's first name! :) )
Okay guys, we're getting tight for time -- there are three spots left and what fun is it to have only 7 teams???... everyone of them would be stacked if we only had that many, so get three more people to join, and if we find more than 3 more people, I'll see if I can expand the league, but we gotta at least fill up those three spots.
Now, for those that are already signed-up, will anyone be able to make the LIVE draft? -- Tuesday, September 25 @ ... 3:25 PM PT ... 4:25 PM MT ... 5:25 PM CT ... 6:25 PM ET. ...I'll be there for sure!
k9killa's first name is Aaron, he lives only about half a block from me.

Millbrook Ice -- Dave -- Icefrogs

The draft order will be as follows, as determined randomly by Y! :
#1 - Boston Blackhawks
#2 - thecanadiens
#3 - Godsmack Rules
#4 - The Ice Jacksonians
#5 - UA Ice Bears
#6 - Slapshot Kings
#7 - WinnipegJets
#8 - Millbrook Ice
While I am hopeful we will fill up the remaining two spots in this league, any further teams that join will simply be placed at the end of the draft order.

Well, today at 6:25 PM ET, we had a great turn-out!... 4 of 9 fantasy managers showed up for the LIVE draft, including myself.
We're all up and ready to go, now... the NHL season begins on October 3, so be sure to have your game day line-up ready to go for the season opener by the deadline of Wednesday, October 3 at 2:59 AM, Eastern Time!
...I'm up for considering any trade offers... I'm very deep at RW (Jaromir Jagr; Brett Hull; Theoren Fleury; and Owen Nolan), but not as comfortable on the left side, and am kinda skeptical up the middle, too, so if you have any LWers or Cers that you want to deal for one of my RWers, gimmie an offer! :)

just curious I'm really not sure at all... I was COMPLETELY unprepared to pick first overall... though I knew that I would take Jagr if I had the opportunity to do so with the first pick, I was thinking, "what is happening!?" when I was told to select first by the computer!
I'm not sure what happened at all... I had randomized the draft order the day before.... maybe an extra team joining in re-setted the order.... I'm really not sure.

The draft order reset because a team joined after the original order was made. The same thing happened in my football league. No big deal.

Well, the season is underway, and my centerman, Radek Bonk, already has 1 goal and 1 assist in only the 2nd persio!!!... hopefully it will NOT be like the SCMB baseball league where I was #1 after opening day... #2 after day two... and #10 by day 30.... where I've been ever since!...
Good luck, guys!!!!
I was just going to ask how this was going! Hope you all are having fun.

...I think I need a d-man.... I have way too many offensive players and need to unload some 'cuz I only have four defensemen and need some liberty to choose from since we can only start 4 every game.
Players I am prepared to deal away:
Vincent Damphousse (C, SJS)
Stu Barnes (C, BUF)
Joe Nieuwendyk (C, DAL)
Dallas Drake (LW, STL)
ANYONE else, if the price is right

I didn't understand this system either until a few weeks into a baseball league I was in that used the same scoring system.
Our SCMB Y! hockey league works on the "Rotisserie League" system... this is NOT a fantasy point system where you get so many points per goal or per assist like in most newspaper pools.
Instead, this is how it works:
Before the season, I, as comissioner, chose the following categories of stats to determine standings: (for skaters) Goals, Assists, +/-, PIM, PPG, SHG, GWG, GTG, (for goalies) W, T, GAA, SV%, and SO. You obtain stats for all players on your starting roster, and these stats combine into the cumulative season total for your team. THEN, every day, your teams' stats are compared to everyone else's stats in the league and you are so-many-points. Because this is a 10-team league, the most points you can get in any one category is 10, and the least you can get is 1 -- so, for example, the Boston Blackhawks currently have the WORST saving percentage for all goalies they've played so far this season at .896. As a result, they are given one point. However, the Boston Blackhawks have the most Goals, PIMs, and PPGs, so they receive "9s" in those categories... all of those points add up to reach their cumulative total in all categories.
These will change daily and go up and down, BASED ON HOW YOU RANK COMPARED TO OTHER TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE.
I've tried to break it down..... Y! summarizes it in their help section for scoring Rotisserie Leagues (http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/hockey/hrules/hrules-03.html). Hope I've helped!... Please ask any other questions you have.
NOTE: To better understand, check our league's standing page (http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/show?page=standings&lid=4622) which shows first how you rank compared to other teams in the first table, and in the second table, your ACTUAL season stats... flip back and forth between the two tables and you should be able to reason it out.

Lee, few things to clarify please, (BTW the link to their help page is a 3 paragraph page which doesn't explain much)
1. You say 'starting roster', is there a difference between 'bench' players and others?
2.So standings are calculated on a one days basis?
I mean today I got the most points in all categories, so for this one day I get the 9 points for all the categories???
again sorry for asking confusing questions.
lmanchur.
10-13-2001, 09:44 AM
"You say 'starting roster', is there a difference between 'bench' players and others?"
Okay -- your stats are accumulated ONLY from the players on your STARTING ROSTER each day. Because of what I, as commissioner, set the customizable options as before the season began, your starting roster consists of one center, one left wing, one right wing, two other forwards of any foward position, four defensemen, and 1 goalie (10 players total). Your roster can hold up to nine additional players of any position -- these nine players are your BENCHED roster.
2.So standings are calculated on a one days basis? I mean today I got the most points in all categories, so for this one day I get the 9 points for all the categories???
NO -- they are calculated for the ENTIRE SEASON, CUMMULATIVELY. All I meant by the phrase that probably confused you is that the standings are updated every day and added to your season totals, so the overall standings are accurate every morning.
To summarize again with actual examples... when the season first started.. the first three days of action... I had about the least amount of goals and asssits and almost EVERYTHING else out of everyone. Because of that, I only had 50 points and was ranked last in the league. However, now, as my players play more game and I become more smart about which players I put on my starting roster, I am getting more goals and more assists and more Everything, so my standing compared to the other teams in the league is going up -- right now, I have 4 goalie wins, the most in the league. So because of that, my ranking has shot up from last to third..... but if other people in the league sign some players that are heating up and their overall team plays better, they might end up scoring more goals and assists than myself, so my ranking will slip a bit...
I hope you understand... if not... just keep bringing on the questions!!!! :)

I wish I would have heard about this sooner.. :(
I joined a fantasy hockey league at a certain other site but only 2 people signed up.
In my Small World auto league however, I am in 1st place. I love it when I have the top 4 wingers and top 2 goalies in the league..

Remember how I predicted the Avs to win the cup at the start of October in 2000, and they won it the following June, in 2001?
.....or how 'bout predicting 5 out of 7 series correctly in the 2001 MLB postseason?
....or choosing Ivan Hilnka being the first coach fired in the NHL in the 2001-2002 season?, and 2 weeks later, he was the 1st coach fired?
...the Detroit Red Wings winning the 2002 Stanley Cup... wait... that still has to happen ....sorry I spoiled the surprise ;)

Hey guys I wish I could say the same. My season has been a disaster so far.
Bure, Blake and others are having a very 'ordinary' start to their seasons.
I should also spend more time managing my bench/starting lineup?
Lee I wondered why you dropped Nolan, not that I picked him up but...

....well, seriously, I dropped him 'cuz he was having, as you said your players were, an "ordinary" start to the season.... no, Nolan's not the leading NHL point scorer, but I expected a lot better things out of him to start the year than what I was getting, so I dropped him and added Sami Kapanen who's ON FIRE!!! and... in addition to Kapanen being on fire, he has a MUCH better +/- which is one of the areas I'm hurting in. ...so there's my logic behind that move! :)
