The Badgers got hit with a five-year probation in Men's B-ball and Football because the NCAA found that a shoe store was giving athletes an unadvertised discount. They also limited the number of FB scholorships the next two seasons from 25 to 20 and they have to cut a BB scholorship for 2003-04. - ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/ncaa/news/2001/1002/1258244.html)

Not only that, but this was the school's third major rules violation since 1994.

Interesting event.

This isn't a surprise. They weren't going to have a good team this year anyway.

Stupid, stupid. Teams are shooting themselves in their feet. They have to know they're going to get caught. It would be interesting to know how many teams cheat like this without anyone knowing.

As much as I don't like to admit it, Purdue got in trouble with the NCAA a few years ago. Unlike Wisconsin, Purdue had to forfeit some postseason awards. I just don't understand why universities continue to do this.

I hate probation, it's like punishing the fans, it hurts them as much as anybody.

I wish there was a way where you could punish the coach (HAL MUMME!) the athletic director (LARRY IVY!) or the indivual that was responsible (CLAUDE BASSETT!) instead of the program where the fans are punished.
