Well, the baseball world is plain boring right now! :) lol

So, lets name our favorite baseball team and player.

Mine: New York Yankees and Derek Jeter.

New York Yankees and David Cone (okay so he's not a major star but I just really like the guy's attitude and he's got great stuff too)

iFroggy
12-31-2000, 10:20 AM
Yeah, David Cone is a great guy. I still can't figure out why he wouldn't want to come back to the World Champs for 500,000 as the 5th starter. I guess he thinks his 4-14 season deserved more.

Ugh, the thread is being taken over by Yankee fans.

2 Yankee Fans = Get over it wedge! lol :D

Two is two too many. I just hope that sentence makes sense.

Boomer

Cone has the ideal spirit to be a closer and it's also less pressure on his, lets say veteran, body (for those that don't know oh hell I can't remember who it was anyway someone wants to sign him to close, was it Texas?). He's just the right type of guy to pick up the tough ninth inning out. however, he's only 16 wins from 200 so he won't want to close because it's so hard to get wins.it's a shame he had such a bad y2k or he'd have a shot at 200 as a closer.

iFroggy

Hey Boom! (May a call you Boom? lol :))

Texas wants to sign him to start. The Royals wanted to sign him to close.

Pedro and the Red Sox.
Let's see: Sox give Yanks Clemens, Boggs and some guy named Ruth. Yanks give Sox Cone and the guy that gave up Bucky Dent's dinger. Seems fair, doesn't it?

Wedge231
01-15-2001, 04:46 PM
That's the Yankees for you :)

iFroggy
01-15-2001, 05:11 PM
Don't blame us for the past Red Sox management's stupidity. The guy sold Ruth for cash and a loan to finance a broadway show - your gonna blame us? lol

lauraann
01-15-2001, 09:10 PM
The Reds and Sean Casey
The D-Backs and Brian Anderson and Luis Gonzalez

Paul O'Neill-I loved him as a Red, I like him as a Yankee;)

All I have to say to you Yankee fans is look at the Chicago Bulls, because that's where you're heading. In three years, the Yankers will be fighting it out with Tampa for last place.
The Sox, on the other hand, have young core guys signed long-term. Just as long as SI doesn't put them on the cover again, they should be fine.

Boomer

Baseball is an entirely different proposition to basketball mainly due to slary capping and the fact that the yankees make so much money-they'll be signing big names (and bringing up talent) for a long time to come. Also, the minor league system helps teams stay big as players are more likely to be loyal if they have come up through a farm system than through a college system and; a lot of guys must think that the yankees are a good chance to improve themselves as players by working with great coaches and are clearly good at bringing talent through (Jeter, Posada etc.)
And finally, the Chicago Bulls might as well have been the Michael Jordan (and Pippen chips in occaisionaly) Bulls. And quite apart from that, the Bulls only fell apart when it turned out that the players had loyalty to Jordan and Phil Jackson not the club.
Anyway, me and IFroggy would still be supporting wether the team are destroying everyone else in the league and gaurenteed a championship in the coming season (reality) or about where the mets are right now (worst case scenario). Am I right Froggy?

Not so fast, fellow. :) As Boomer said, baseball and basketball are entirely different things - unlike in basketball, the Yanks will always been able to bring new and talented players in to replace the old/retired or traded.

Yes, the Yankees have proven they can do well year in and year out. They've always been good except for some years in the 80's.

Bourbon42

The reason the comparison between the Yankees and Bulls works is because the Yankees face in the next few years a dramatic overhaul in their lineup, just like the Bulls did. First it will be Torre, O'Neill(37) and Clemens(38). Then Brosius and Justice, both 34, and then Tino Martinez (33). Nearly every one of New York's major contributors is over 30, and they haven't exactly been kicking All-Stars out of their minor-league system either. I know baseball and basketball are different realms, but regardless of the sport, when a team loses its core, there is always a slide. And after the next players' strike, Georgie might not be able to buy himself a new team.

Mets and Piazza.

iFroggy
01-16-2001, 07:24 PM
Well... Bourbon, its all the same with the complainers. "Buying a team." lol I suppose keeping our own guys and signing a good free agent every little while counts as buying a team.

Bulls fans and Yankee fans. We have experienced great teams and glory. I am a Bulls fan infact, ironically enough, and I think we'll be back. :) The thing that isn't noticed by all the finger pointers is that maybe you should check up on your history. Take a look at the Yankees before 1994... tell me what you see? I sure didn't hear you complaining then. Funny isn't it.

Mark McGwire, and the St Louis Cards he is one of the few players I will go out of my way to see when they come to Milwaukee.

Wedge231
01-19-2001, 06:24 PM
I was at the games when McGwire hit his 50th and 51st homeruns against the Mets. And I also have the Topps card of his 50th homerun. Cool huh?

Favorite player: I could go on forever!
Tino Martinez. I've been a fan of his since USA Today first did a story on him when he was in College. There was just something about his work ethic that made you know that he was going to wind up in the majors someday.

Frank Thomas, Mo Vaughn, Luis Gonzalez, Andruw Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Mark Grace, Carlton Fisk, Jim Palmer, Rick Cerone, Dave Righetti, Chris Chambliss, (we can list former players, can't we??) Okay, I think that's enough! :)

How can you like the Yankees? They win way too much. Plus, their over-confident, stuck-up individuals! Oh jeez, all these years of hatred are coming out now!

Go SOX.

Wedge231

I feel the same way. GO METS. The Yankees are so predictable. You know they will win in the end for almost every game.

... this thread is getting off topic. Lets just let people post their favorite player... we already know how we feel about the Yankees. :)

(And btw... the Mets won more games then the Yankees last year. I knew they were gonna win in the end for almost every game. :D)

Sorry for the off topicness. Is that a word?

Okay, I'll name my favorite non-Met player just to keep the Yankee fans happy. I'd have to say Delgado and Guerrero are awesome. They are both great players who don't get enough credit because they're in Canada. And for pitching I like Pedro.

Favorite team other than the Mets: I'm a die hard Met fan but if they are out of the pciture (as in playoffs) I would go with anyone but the Yankees and Braves

Let's not turn this into a flame war. If you have an opinion, back it up. Saying your team is the best and the other sucks doesn't do anything. Thank you.

iFroggy
02-11-2001, 05:43 PM
I wouldn't go that far. The thing about opinions, is that they are your own - you don't have to back them up. :) At least some of the time that is.

Wedge231

Ok, I will back my opinion up. I like the Mets because
A) I live in New York
B) My parents are Mets fans
C) Do not like the Yankees
D) Won the World Series when I was being baptized (1986)

Pat Burrel huh? I remember him ruining some games for the Mets last year. We just need to make sure Benitez doesn't have to face him in the last inning.

I am an unabashed Twins fan, have been since '61. My favorite player of all times was Harmon Killebrew, but currently my favorite player is McGwire.

I am an Atlanta Braves fan. It's hard to have a hometeam when you live in Montana.

My favorite player has to be Mark Lemke. He was a clubhouse leader and had a good glove at 2nd base. There was just something about him that caught my eye.

Other favorite players include the everimproving Andruw Jones, the MVP Chipper Jones, the inspiring Andres Galarraga, and Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz, not only because they're great pitchers, but they also do things for the people off the field.

You know, that Guerrero guy up north is pretty good too, I hear.

John Olerud is one of my favorites too. I liked him back in 1993 when he won the batting title. Then he cooled off for the next few years but he did well while he was on the Mets for those two years.

Well, I just started watching baseball in the last few years, but I was born and bred to be a Yankees fan. My dad trained me and trained me so that the first sentence I spoke when I was a baby was "Go Yankees". Not to mention my uncle's pinstriped station wagon with "Yankees1" license plates. I've always watched the series, and since the Yankees usually win it, I've seen them play a lot. :P I'm working on figuring out who my favorite player is. You gotta love Paul O'Neill...when he does badly, he puts on a good show, throwing bats around or something. And when he does well, for some reason it just makes you feel so good inside. :) As for you Red Sox fans...sorry about Nomar there, that's gotta be rough. Boo hoo.

Welcome Mepasho! :)

Paul O'Neil = a lot of heart. I like the guy alot.

Wedge231
04-04-2001, 07:46 PM
Why all the Yankee fans???

I don't like O'Neil. Of the Yankees, my favorites are Jeter and Rivera. My least favorite is Clemens. That has something to do with him throwing bats at my favorite player.

He didn't throw bats at people then though. Instead he would hit people with balls. He just had to move up a little when he made it to New York.
