I heard about these fantasy hockey leagues. I'm interested in joining one. I would just like to know how they work first. If anyone has one that is actually running, I'd like to participate if I like the way the game goes.

Hi there, dynamite kid! Check out the Sports Central Hockey League: http://www.sports-central.org/community/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2196 - I'm afraid it may be too late to join, but feel free to ask Lee (SC-Lee)!

Most fantasy hockey leagues are "NHL-based" leagues -- those are the kinds that are based directly on NHL stats and how the players on your team do in the NHL. Y!, CBS Sportsline, etc., etc., etc., have games like that.

The other type of fantasy hockey leagues are "sim-based." I used to run a sim-based NHL league for over 3 years until it got to be too much for me and I had to shut it down. These leagues have a commish (e.g.: me) that has a simulator on their computer, and you get people to sign up and draft teams and manage their teams... the commish performs all league operations on their computer by instruction of the managers (e.g.: game day line-ups, trades, draft, etc., etc.) and then the commish creates a schedule on the simulator and the simulator generates a score for every game.... these scores are based on the teams' players, as the players are ususally rated according to how they perform in the NHL, but that is the only relationship to the NHL. There are many different simulators out there. The UFHLL (http://www.hockeytape.com/fantasy/) is a good place to look for simulators and rosters and for an example of a league, you can look at my league's old web site (http://geocities.com/FNHLNet) that is still on the 'net, but no longer receiving updates.
