The US Open will, for the first time, have split-tee starts (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/story?id=1264296) in the year 2002 to allow for 2 more daylight hours and more flexibility to change the schedule in case of stoppages of play due to weather.

The 2002 US Open will be played at a course in Bethpage State Park, which is a public course with reasonable green fees that anyone can play for just $40 on the weekend (though there are warning signs as you enter the course, "For Experienced Golfers Only." ;) )

I saw them do it in a couple of big tournaments this year. It was confusing because I remember Tiger started out on the back and the commentators would say something like he's whatever (2over, 3 under..) for 5 holes and he would be on like # 15 ..I caught on quickly though.
