View Full Version : Yankees: Best dynasty ever?
Interesting column here: http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/epstein/853187.html
Do you think the '96-'00 Yankees are the best baseball dynasty EVER? You have to take into count other teams from back before many of us were born, too.

No, the Yanks do hold the title though. I don't know the exact years, maybe 30's-50's, they were amazing.

I am a die hard Yankee fan. No, this latest dynasty is not the greatest ever.
From '47 to '53 the Yankees won 6 out of 7 - including 5 in a row. Thats probably the best dynasty based upon World Series. They won in the quite a few World Series from the late '20s to early '50s.
The 96-00 Yankees are definately not the most dynamic. Although they seem to be succesful, several other Yankee dynasties were much more effective.

In 1998, Sports Illustrated issued a book tiled "Greatest Teams," and divided thirty sports teams from all the major professional sports in North America (NHL, MLB, NBA, and NFL) into 3 categories: "Dynasties", "Teams of a Decade", and "Also Greats."
"Also Greats" were teams the ruled their sport for only a few years (e.g.: New York Kincks from 1969-1973). "Teams of a Decade" were teams that, basically, fit that title, like the Chicago Bulls of the '90s and the Edmonton Oilers for the 80's
SI defined a "dynasty" as ...
a franchise that everybody loves to hate... How to get hated? Win too much. The Montreal Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups. The New York Yankees have won 23 World Series. The Boston Celtics have won 16 NBA titles. No other team in the NBA, NFL, NHL, or Major League Baseball has won more than 11 championships. Therefore, these three teams are the true dynasties in sports.
So I would have to say, "Yes" the Yankees are a dynasty, with 25 World Championships now... but a "dynasty" is something you get over many, many years -- not just four years from 1996-2000.

The argument was not if they are a dynasty :D - just if they were the greatest one... :)

Oh.. oops!
Well, has any other team won 25 World Series? No, so, by my definition of a dynasty from SI, then "yes," the Yankees are definitely the greatest baseball dynasty, but a "dynasty" is not something they acquired from 1996-2000, as stated in the original post.

Hey--this is an old thread. But the Yanks were better in the 40's and 50's.

Had to bring this thread up because it is an interesting one. They are good. 96 to 02. Are they going to win this year. I don't think they will.

No the Yankees that won five straight championships from 1949 to 1953 are. When Torre wins six straight his Yankees will be, or even if he wins a couple more in the next three years I will give him the nod.

There is no debate. Of course they are the best baseball dynasty ever. Just read my definition I got from SI above.

To me anyway, long-term consistency must also be taken into consideration; and in that regard, even more amazing than all the pennants and World Series they won was the fact that the Yankees finished in the first division for 39 years in a row - 1926 through 1964 (and also went 53 years without a single last-place finish, from 1913 through 1965). They are apparently headed for their tenth consecutive first-division finish (counting 1994, when they led their division at the time the players went out on strike) this year; in recent times, the criteria for a "first-division finish" has been whether the team received any money from the postseason players' pool; from 1969 through 1993 a team needed to finish third or higher in its division to qualify for such a share (this remained unchanged despite the addition of a seventh team to the American League's divisions in 1977, and to the National League's divisions in 1993), and from 1995 to the present a second-place division finish has been required (with or without the team making the playoffs as a wild card; interestingly, the third-place finisher in the six-team NL Central does not receive a share). By that standard, the Yankees' most recent "second-division" finish was in 1992, when they tied for fourth in the then seven-team AL East.
If they win two more in the next 3 years I will give it to them. But hopefully it doesnt happen.

There can really be no debate or argument-they Yankees have won 26 World Series titles. They are the best team overall in baseball history-once someone or team passes them in overall championships the Yankees are number one. Just like college football-Alabama has won the most national championship(12) than any other college-they will be the best overall until one school wins 12 or more national championships. Just my humble opinion. lol:goof:
