This was a good "looking back" piece that seems very suitable for this time as we prepare for 2002, so I thought I'd share it. Feel free to comment with your golf wishes and hopes!
Up to your neck in wrapping paper, ribbons and tissue paper? Relax. Push those presents aside, grab another cup of coffee and see what we'd like to see under the tree for some of the game's players and friends:

* Tiger Woods. Hmm. Time for himself. No bears to chase him in Alaska. No one looking for an autograph. No cameras in sight. And a day where "How are you?" isn't followed with "Do you have a minute?"

* David Duval. A green jacket.

* Greg Norman. A strong opening 36 in April, so he can play four rounds at Augusta again.

* Dottie Pepper, Juli Inkster, Rosie Jones, Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel, et al. Wins. This International domination on the LPGA circuit is getting old.

* Bill Murray. A lifetime pass to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, if for no reason other than those socks. And hats. He may look like Carl the greenskeeper, but he keeps the game in perspective -- which isn't always the easiest thing to do.

* Phil Mickelson. A PGA Championship.

* Davis Love III. A really good Sunday when he's in the final pairing. We don't care where.

* Charles Barkley. A lesson that works.

* David Feherty. A best-seller. This guy can just look at you and make you laugh.

* David Toms. An encore.

* Ty Tryon. His high school diploma.

* Colin Montgomerie. His grump back. He plays better with a chip on his shoulder.

* The LPGA. A fast start. There's no other way since their first major of the year is only the fourth event of the downsized season.

* Casey Martin. At least one more year to play competitively.

* John Daly. Another year of sobriety and improvement.

* Arnold Palmer. Everyone off his back.

* Scott Verplank. A few more rungs up the ladder.

* Joe Durant. A better pace. Just think if he had kept on going last year.

* Justin Leonard. Another marathon. This one under three hours, 40 minutes.

* Curtis Strange. More patience than ever. This could be an interesting Ryder Cup.

* Bethpage Black. More routes in and out. Since Rudy Giuliani can't pull it off before he leaves office, we'll settle for smooth traffic flow.

* Tom Lehman. A big comeback.

* Jerry Kelly. A PGA TOUR win.

* Kenny Perry. The deed to Country Creek Golf Course.

* Ernie Els. A PGA TOUR or European Tour win. Geez.

* Mark Steinberg, who is Tiger Woods' agent. A day away from his cell phone.

* Tom Kite. A great week at Augusta. How many other SENIOR PGA TOUR players have played their way into the Masters?

* Masters chairman Hootie Johnson. A thick skin. You know someone's going to complain.

* Fuzzy Zoeller. A chance to have fun again -- this time on the SENIOR PGA TOUR.

* Ben Crenshaw. The game he's lost.

* Larry Nelson. Another five-win season.

* Se Ri Pak and Karrie Webb. Another chance to chase Annika Sorenstam.

* Laura Davies. Her in-your-face game.

* Harrison Frazar. A year with no health problems.

* The Shell Houston Open. A smooth path to return to Memorial Park.

* Blaine McCallister. Consistency.

* America. Faith and an even firmer resolve.
