View Full Version : 71% Rule

Ever hear of the "71% Rule"? Probably not. That's because I invented it, and I just took up golf a few months ago.
See, every time you chip onto the green from any distance, it seems like that danged ball is soooo far from the flag. How come? I did some simple calculations and discovered the "71% Rule". It goes like this. For simplicity, you assume the green is a circle. Since A = pi r squared, we note that the area of the inner circle of the green is equal to the outer ring when r squared is 1/2, and r squared is half is when r is .71 of the radius from cup to edge of green! Q.E.D.
Enjoy, and remember Jaeger's "71% Rule". Next time that ball is so far out, you'll just think, "Hey that sucker's at LEAST 71% of the way to
the edge". And it won't be no big deal!

My same thoughts, Rick.
I don't know what to make of this, but suppose that I did understand it. . . . . how many greens do you know are perfect circles where the A=pi r^2 rule applies?

Gee, SC Lee, you're a real sport, arentcha.
The thing is this: no matter WHAT assumption I made, you could have challenged it.
There really was a point to my message, SC Lee.
It is that the area of the outside of a circle, ellipse, trapezoid, triangle, heck any sort of shape you'd care to mention, is BIGGER than the heart of that shape, which is NORMALLY where the cup is.
Now, I have played enough courses to know thst there are lots of cups on one side, and nowhere NEAR the middle.
Still, there's a point to my message.
Don't be such a killjoy when I'm tryin' to teach ya.
It ain't easy teachin' people like you yanno.

Good Lord, man. This is sports chat. Dont try and impress us with your knowledge. If you want to talk about geometry and the circumfrence of a cicle, go to a math message board.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Dear "Ricky the Kid",
Grow up, will you, "Kid"?
1. I was talking about golf.
This IS a golf message board.
2. I brought up a unique point of view with respect to golf. It is reasoned. It attacks NOBODY.
3. It has a valid and appropriate POINT to it.
Comes along you and SC Lee to jump all over me for it. Wow. Tough crowd. Intolerant, humorless crowd. At least the two of you are.
Why don't you start an original thread - the both of you. I'll respond in kind and we'll see how YOU like it.
SpiderMBA,
First of all, let me tell you that although some of us may disagree with your views on the sport, we value your participation here very much. I am all for debates, but I have to draw the line when the focus leaves sports and becomes personal attacks. While this is the golf board, this is NOT the place for that.
That said, I wouldn't say we're a "tough, intolerant, humorless crowd", but we just don't want a someone who's a newcomer to try to push and shove their views down our throats. No matter what in life, not everyone is going to agree with you no matter how right (or wrong) you may be.
Now, back onto the topic at hand: golf.
P.S. Rick isn't really a kid, he is a grown man with a sense of humor. ;)

I don't see Ricky the "Kid's" sense of humor, James. Show me his "humorous" line, would you?
Same thing with SC Lee's.
Earlier, Ricky said something about my being a "Democrat", when I offered a jpeg file of "The Official Seal of the Democratic Party."
I'm NOT a Democrat, James. In fact, I'm a libertarian. But Ricky and SC Lee and you don't let facts stand in your way when you have "humor" on your minds.
Now why don't you go back to your mundane discussions of why, in your exalted opinion, pros who are medically unable to walk, SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be allowed to ride in a cart.
Exciting "humorous" stuff, that . . .

Well, I do have a sense of humor, and its gotten me in trouble a couple of times here and on other boards.
But its not like talking about the circumference of a circle is more exiting than talking about whether or not Casey Martin should ride a cart. I dont know why you are posting in this forum anyway, you have already said you dont like golf. Why dont you just go play some tennis with your fruity friends...errrrrrrrrrr....the other people that play tennis with you?

how can you compete with an accomplished scuba diver!?!? boy..oh..boy :D  (no offense intended)
Must say the golf forum has never seen so much activity. I will leave this one so Marc can decide if it stays open.

What actually makes someone an "accomplished" scuba diver? Did he find a treasure chest or something?!?! :)

I can see that this will turn into an all-out personal flames thread. Before locking it, I just want to add in a few last thoughts. Spider, please heed Marc's comments about pushing your views onto others.
This forum thrives on a certain degree of respect that we give each other, as well as each others opinions/beliefs. If you are here to debate, then do so in a proper fashion (i.e. no low-blows or name calling). If you have trouble taking what you give, then before posting, ask yourself if you would appreciate someone saying the same things to you.
You would probably say I'm biased in this matter and I would be inclined to agree with you. So I will leave it up to Marc to decide what goes and what stays.
Thanks,
Ravi
