I guess the Blue Jays didn't want the Maple Leafs taking up the front page with all of THEIR trade talks, so they went out and moved controversial off-field pitcher David Wells. Here's the deal:

TO TORONTO:
LHP Mike Sirotka
RHP Kevin Beirne
RHP Mike Williams
LF Brian Simmons

TO CHICAGO WHITE SOX:
LHP David Wells
RHP Matt Dewitt

So can a "real" baseball fan alayze this for me? -- Will Mike Sirotka fill in for Wells and be Toronto's ace, only for 100% of the season (Wells just showed up for the first half)? Do the Jays finally have a decent pitching staff, because with that, they are definitley wild card contenders.

I think the Jays got the better of this deal. I like Sirotka, not just because I talk to him from time to time lol. He is a good lefty and I think he can help the Blue Jays. His ERA was lower then Wells ERA last year. I look at ERA's really, not W-L records a whole lot. That just says that someone got more run support.

As a huge White Sox fan, I have to say that this trade is a dissapointment. I agree with iFroggy that the Jays came out better. While watching most of the Sox games in 2000, I noticed Sirotka is a very good pitcher. I'm not sure it was worth it to get the name David Wells.

For the fourth consecutive season, I'm picking the Blue Jays to get into the playoffs. With Sirotka added to Carpenter, Halladay, Escobar, Steve Parris and so on, they are a very good young deep rotation. They also have one of the best closers in the game with Koch. With all the Blue Jay offense they should be in good shape.

Yes. Their offense should help them get a playoff spot. Their staff is very good too. The Jays are getting the better part of this deal. They're getting some good young talent.

And much as I like the real Boomer and think he is a very cool pitcher he is 38 years of age. You may have guessed that I like him from the nickname by the way. Sirkota is pretty useful and i think that the jays have got the good end of this one.

...someone said Sirkota lead MLB in ERA of all LHP last year... anyone want to confirm that?

"rappel", I agree with you that the Jays will be in the playoffs.... their pitching is ALWAYS quesionable, though... if they would have had that down the stretch, they would've been in the big dance for sure.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so hopefully this year guys like Carpenter, Halladay, and Escobar have matured and improved a bit... enough to take it to the "next level," at least...

Lee,

Sirotka lead all Lefties in the AL with a 3.79 ERA. In the National League, Randy Johnson, Mike Hampton, Al Leiter, Tom Glavine, Rick Ankiel, all lefties, had a lower ERA then him.

Cool!.... looks like the Jays finally have a reason to be optimistic this year!

Two Mets had lower ERA's than him! Yes! Go Mets!!! Champs in 2001!

...yeah... If the Jays can't make the posteason, the Mets are my team... they've been my fav team other than Toronto for a few years now, actually...

How many of those "Mets" fans like more then one team? LOL

Thinking that the jays have a shot at the world series is pushing it. But the Mets to win? That's just downright unrealistic. Anyway, no one is going to touch the Yankees next year- Perfect season here we come (well maybe not perfect but the number 27 and the phrase four-peat spring to mind)

You may be right about the Mets. The Yankees winning a fourth time? Baseball loses another fan here. Where is the competition?

What is wrong with the Mets. They've been my team since I knew what baseball was and are my only team. I really think they have few weaknesses except:
A. They choke in the postseason
B. Piazza did bad in the end
C. Make bad trades (Bordick, boy was he good!)

If they could improve these weaknesses, they probably could win the World Series. Also Atlanta has to get swept by the Cardinals because I don't think the Mets can win a best-of-7 vs the Braves.

I've got to go along with Marc on this one. The Mets may pull it off again but another Yankee championship? I'm not a big fan of parity but we're starting to get into a rut here. Like a lot of people I tend to root for the underdog (think USA hockey in '80) and always like to see new blood in the post-season. Kinda mix things up, ya know? Keep it lively!

The second half of last season well'z stunk. He'z 38 years old and fat and Mike Sirotka is not 38 and not fat. The only reason wellz had such a good record last year was because of the Jay'z amazing hitting. If Sirotka averages about 3 runs a game his record would be like....30-0. If David Wells played with another team last year, his record probably would've been 0-30. Unless Chris Carpetner, Kelvim Escobar and Roy Halladay have a better season then they did, the Jays would not make the playoffs but if they do have a good season, i think the jays would win the world series!...and.......um......i had something else to say but i forgot so i'm done.

I don't think the Jays would have won the World Series, sorry.

Jays in the playoffs? Probably not. Reason being is that in 2001, whomever doesn't win the East (Yanks or Sox) will get the wild card. Being in the East, the Jays are screwed. Even if the Sox (or Yanks) somehow aren't in the race, the A's, Rangers, Indians, etc. would probably finish better than the Jays, since the East is such a tough division.

Yes. Luckily my Mets only have to compete with the Braves.

...anyone hear the latest?... Stiortka (sp?) had a bad MRI scan, and now may require surgrey, causing him to be out for the entire 2001 season, which means the Jays are now looking for some sort of compensation if another doctor's examination confrims this.

This could get sticky! :)

This has really turned into a big thing.

The Commissioner said that the trade will be upheld and the Blue Jays will recieve no compensation.

"Although there is a dispute about whether certain facts about Sirotka's condition were disclosed before the clubs agreed to the trade, the Toronto club talked directly to Sirotka about his health on the day of the trade and believed it had the opportunity to make the trade conditional," Selig said. "The Blue Jays never elected to do so."

The White Sox guy wants to make adjustments, I suppose it is good of him to do so, but I think they might be doing it just to make it look like they're the good guys. :)
