View Full Version : Connection speed?

I was just wondering what everyone around here is connected at. My old Gateway forced me to use 28.8 until this summer when I got my new Dell and now I have a cable modem. The difference is easily noticed escpecially when I'm downloading files at 220/k sec. Overall, cable is good for the price but is sometimes slow during peak times of usage. What are you guys connected at? I'm guessing most of you either have 56k, cable, and maybe a few who have DSL.

I am currently connected at 44000 bps.

my modem connects at 26.4 KBPS
get this: we had to DOWNGRADE our 56K modem to a 28.8 when we got the new computer last year 'cuz our phone lines couldn't handle the faster one.... wierd, I thought.
...If i moved to a town 34 miles away, I could get high-speed access (we're talking over 10MBPS)... unfortunately, they're only providing the high-speed access in a 3-kilometer radius of the city, so I'm out of luck :(
...guess I'll have to stick to this slow thing 'till I goto University!

I've got a cable modem, but using the Intel Anypoint network slows my connection down some. Thankfully, we're building our own computer (900 Athlon) which will serve so hopefully I'll be surfing much faster.
I'm on a 56K connection that usually connects at 26.4 or 28.8, nothing more. We were close to getting a cable modem, now that they're available, but we heard some not-so-great things that would come along with the new connection. We'd still have to pay for an additional phone line, another fee for having the connection on an additional computer, not to mention the $39.99 monthly fee, totalling for $65+ a month - not what we're willing to pay. DSL isn't available, or we're not close enough to a station, and satellite access doesn't look good enough to suit our needs. So, we're stuck. :(

Whoa! Me, in rural Mississippi for 2 years, I have one of the fastest connections? And I thought I was super slow compared to you guys. :)

Why would you still have to pay for an additional phone line, and whats this about paying for using it on another computer? Drop the phone line. I know a lot of people who use their cable connection on more than one computer and don't pay for anything else. All you have to do is network them and get some sort of Internet Sharing Software.

Yeah, all you have to do is network them. I dropped my extra line when we got cable and I know a lot of people who network their computers.
Since my dad works at a university and we use their I got LAN which i think is fast and its free!!!!!

T-1 all the way baby...of course I'm using my company's network...it's all part of Project Mayhem, you see...but I can't talk about it, that's the first and second rule!

Marc -- sounds like I'm in the same situation you are! -- we're too far away from DSL.
However, we could have gotten a deal through our TV stallite dish -- when we got our dish 2 years ago, I really wanted Bell ExpressVu because you got all these extra stations where you could watch over 1,000 NHL games a year! (I guess that's the reason we never got it, 'cuz I'd be watching hockey all the time! :) )... anyways, we got StarChoice.
Now my parents wish we would have gotten ExpressVu because they are now offering high speed access. One problem, though: You have to buy a $100 receiver (plus installation fees), and then you have your regular $26.95/month internet bill, AS WELL AS a $30-35/month fee for the use of the dish for your internet.... then ExpressVu's TV bills are I bit higher (I think) than StarChoice, so it's just too much already!
:(
I've got cable access, but it seems to be down too often around here...oh well. Ill have a faster connection next year at college.

We would have to pay for an additional phone line because the cable lines in my area are not updated - that's all about I know - they would have to split one of our cable lines with a phone line.
And we would have to pay for an additional cable modem and such for our laptop, the other computer we want cable access with.
Regarding networking, I'm weary of doing that, but can you recommend any good ones?

Recommend any good what? Sorry, I don't understand what you're asking for. Networking programs?

Win2K and Linux come with networking programs.

Yes, networking programs. And I'm on Win98 - there's no way I'm switching to 2k or Linux (ugh).

I don't see what's wrong with Win2k. I feel that it is the best version of Windows right now.

I didn't say anything was wrong with it, but I don't want to go through the hassle of leaving my current Win98 I've been on for three years.

I have Win98 on my computer and I am on a laptop that has WinMe right now. I don't see too much difference. I like them both.

C'mon, ME is horrible. Let's not start on that subject. My friend got it and he had to replace it with Windows 2000.

...someone who has Windows Me, can u do me a favor?:
Goto the Control Panel and then double-click on "System", and in the "General" tab, tell me what version of Windows you are running?
Just wondering, because Windows '95 to Windows '98 wasn't a FULL version upgrade... like, Windows '95 was 4.1 or something, and Windows '98 was 4.2... just wondering if Windows Me is still in the same 4.x category...
..it's pure marketing brilliance (or scamming) by Microsoft, because they're selling all three as "new" versions of the Windows OS.

It says:
Microsoft Windows Me
4.90.3000
Regardless of what others say, I like it, its not that bad at all. Thats just my opinion.

And regardless of what others say, my opnion is that ME is horrible. Then again, so is Microsoft. But since I probably woulnd't know how to use Linux, I'll stick with a Windows OS.
