The 34-year-old quarterback told Dallas TV station WFAA that he thinks he can help the Cowboys again at quarterback. Aikman, who led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles, suffered two concussions last season.
Crazy man! I don't see why he would want to play. Check that, I understand why he wants to play. But, I don't understand how he could make the decision based upon his health. He should retire and enjoy life for a bit, because the effects of these concussions can and will affect him as he gets older.
I think everyone here would agree it is a bad, bad decision on Aikman's part. iFroggy summed it up - he has nothing else to play for and he should have realized that it is his time to go. But, unfortunately, his desire to play is hurting him negatively in the long-run, and most significantly, the Cowboys need to start re-building by drafting a young QB.

Yeah, I'm a Dallas Cowboys' fan and I think he should have hanged them up a couple of concussions ago and definitely think he should hang them up now. Steve Young made the right decision when he was faced with the same exact situation at the beginning of last year and I think Aikman should follow suit and retire. I think Aikman got married within the last year too so hopefully, he'll listen to his wife and call it quits for good.
I felt the same way about Young because the Niners were rebuilding last year and the Cowboys should be rebuilding now. If Young or Aikman had teams that were Super Bowl contenders I could see them trying to stay on to get that one last ring but with nothing to really play for and the Cowboys being a bit away from even making the playoffs, I think what Troy should do is pretty obvious.

Aikman should know better. His name came up on a thread a few months ago...we were talking about athletes who don't have the sense to know when to retire. Aikman has 3 Super Bowl rings and is a sure thing for the Hall of Fame. He should have all the money he'll ever need. Why bother? The Cowboys are a wreck. They aren't going to win the Super Bowl next season, or the season after that, for that matter. Why not just retire while you're still intact and get into ownership or coaching if you wind up missing the game.
Then again, Aikman (like all professional athletes) has got to be a hugely competitive person. He wouldn't have reached the peak of his sport without incredible drive and determination. Football has been the biggest thing in his life for most of his life, and giving it up while he still thinks he can play is probably incredibly difficult for him. But it would be easier to understand if his career wasn't as accomplished as it is, or if the Cowboys were on the brink of the Super Bowl again and he wanted to go out a winner. It would take quite a bit of offseason restructuring to even give the Pokes a shot at the playoffs again.

It's time for Troy to take a step back and think about his future after football. His health is a major concern at this point in his life. The Cowboys are not going anyway next year. As a team they need to look at the future, something Aikman will nto be a part of. This would be an ideal time to bring in the next QB. Aikman could always stay on as a backup.

Being a "DIE-HARD" Cowboy's fan, it's time for Aikman to retire. He has been hit way too many times, and one of these times he is really going to get it..
The obvious is that he is a warrior. This guy has done it all, and he does not want to be remembered as a quarterback that had to retire due to injuries. What does he have to play for?
Personally, think he is crazy for stepping on the field again next season.
I think Aikman, if he lasts, will play two more seasons with the Cowboys. The Cowboys have no first round pick again next season, which knocks out the possibility of them getting a quality quarterback. Look for the Cowboys to draft a quarterback in the 2002 draft.

Having been a DALLAS fan from the time I was 8, till the day the(ick...)OILERS-now TITANS came to Nashville, I have watched them be awesome, pretty good, then awful...I am still an Aikman fan and to an extent always will be I suppose...I think DALLAS' day is over until they can rebuild and begin anew...not to mention Troy is gonna get hit one day and if it does not kill him it will make him an ameoba...I would hate to see such a strong, intelligent man lose his life or his health.
Troy, take a bow and retire knowing you were a great QB and we all admire your tenacity...Now, go have a life...:-)

He has been released by the Cowboys!
Wonder where he's headed now... he still wants to play!

I was surprised to read this news...but not too surprised. Jones and Aikman have always seemed to have a somewhat frosty relationship.
But Troy should have had the common sense to retire or demand a trade before this became necessary. He could have retired, then un-retired later if there was interest from other teams. Now his Dallas career will be tainted by ending after his worst-ever regular season and him becoming a salary cap casualty. Of course, he still wants to play, still thinks he CAN play, but does anyone out there share that opinion?
I'm of the mind that he could still be valuable...teams with a young QB could get a lot from having one of the best passers in the last decade on their roster. Three Super Bowls and 1 MVP, countless playoff exp...but is he going to demand to start?
Well, anyway...he's had been 9 and 14 concussions. I think that would be enough for anyone...

I agree with you that he still has some value. I wouldn't mind having him in Miami, give him a shot for the starting QB job, Fiedler sure hasn't been anything near fantastic, at least in my opinion.
But, it doesn't look like he'll be coming down here anyway.

Aikman may just go into TV, thats what that article says. The Broncos offered him a backup job and he is in talks with the Chiefs I guess.

Backup position, huh? I doubt Aikman would take that with his big ego. I hope he retires/goes into TV.
