Why is USA so terrible at soccer and never, ever even gets close to even placing in one of this competitions??
Because we focus on real sports like basketball, baseball, football, and hockey. :D

That's okay, soccer "futbol" just speaks for itself. Soccer is the number one sport in the world. I was in international sport class and my buddy asked what people from other countries thought of how crazy we get @ sports in the states. Um.... Hooligans.. that's all I have to say. People do not get killed here for cheering for another team

Hey Jenna, I agree. The So called fans in England and Europe,Latin & South America, are fanatical about their teams. In North America,we are a little more civilized. However I have seen some of these "hooligan' tactics even in college games. The World cup of soccer only comes around once every 4 years. If you missed the series in 1998,I'm sorry for you. The USAid quite well, and the time zone was in your favor. Most games I shall be following (for ESPN soccernet.com)don't start until after midnight because they are in Japan and Korea. You should check in any you can catch. These are some of the world's best. Not like baseball,(which I like & follow),where the "world Series" is for the (until conscription)2 Canadian teams and the balance American teams.(george S. wouldn't want it any other way). Why not include Japan or Cuba or The Dominican Republic.Check out the Mariner's lineup.

OK,so the World cup of soccer got off to a great start this morning, with a big upset when defending champions France went down to defeat by upstart Senegal 1-0.Don't tell me that all you 'sport fans' aren't tuning this in!France incidently are the favorites to repeat at 5-1.

I'm taking Germany to win still. When do they play?? Sorry, not that into it. Like I said before somewhere on these boards, I'll probably watch the last half of the last game.

Despite their 8-0 win over S.Arabia I still don't believe Germany have a chance to win. Their team is not great plus they have big injury problems. I can't see them beating relatively injury free teams like Argentina, England, Italy, and even France (yes I know France lost yesterday....)

Germany beat a BAD team. Thats all there is to read into that.

I think Canada is like 90th or worse in the "football" rankings.

I agree.:D I can see the American pushing for stupid rule changes if they become a force in FIFA. Things like timeouts, commercial breaks, etc. Believe it or not they talked about these ideas and most of the talk came from MLS circles/USSF (United States Soccer Federation). Thank god FIFA didn't even consider them seriously.

what does FIFA stand for again?.... something-something-football-association I'm guessing?
I saw some of DEN/UGR yesterday.... you would think with like 20 million people in the stands they could make some noise but it seemed to be quiet and there was only 1 announcer which I found strange and he was quite dull and he was talking UNDER what little noise the crowd was making so I couldn't even hear him. It was quite boring I thought, but the 2-1 goal for Denmark was really good... you hafta appreciate the skillful parts of it at least. Still, I can't see how that many people get excited about football. It's so slow and boring.... and how come the refs don't call those offsides!? :D

Admittably, there has been some boring football so far, but also some good games too. This will improve as the tourmament progresses. FIFI stands for "the FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE de FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION". It was formed in Paris in 1904 by delegates from Holland,Belgium,Switzerland,Denmark,Sweden and Spain.

A great win for US soccer in general.
They did something that they hadn't done even at USA'94:Finish their chances.
Young players like the 19 year olds DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan played like veterans.
US still need to work on thie defensive coverage, especially on set pieces (corners, freekicks ...) but all in all a great game and I give a lot of credit to coach Bruce Arena.
Win, win, and more wins for the USA! We take on Germany at 7 AM EST tomorrow, in what could be a great game. We've made it the round of 8, this is huge for America. Any World Cup thoughts?
Great job by the US squad, now they take on one of the true Soccer powers in the worls. Portugal is good, as is South Korea and Mexico, but Germany is one of a select couple countries that have ruled socer.
You don't get bigger then Germany, Brazil, Italy, England and Argentina. These are the true big dogs of soccer.
US gets there shot at one of the big boys!

I'm not a big enough football fan to be very serious but that seems to be the general consensus of alot of non-americans.

I say Germany whoops US like 11-0 :D Haha..... I find soccer so boring; the goaltenders are useless, too. They never get any of the high kicks and always dive down.... anything over their head they can't stop and they only face like 8 shots a game -- how hard could it be to stop 8 shots!? ... NHL goalies stop an average of 26 or more! :D

I hope you are kidding. What is the ratio of the goalie size to the size of the goal in the two sports.
BTW soccer is not boring
Damn! I was hoping they would pull it off, but it had to end somewhere. Meanwhile, Brazil got past those stinky Britains. :D

it's football ! football football football football football football .
Im glad the USA is out!!!! Go Brazil!!

I too was glad to see Brazil beat England. I am German myself and while I live in the US, my grandparents on both sides came to America from Germany so in this and past world cups I have rooted for Germany, so I am glad they won also. US had an excellent showing in this world cup and will probably be a fixture in the quarterfinals of future world cups.
I really hope it is Germany and Brazil in the final. The contrasting styles should make for an excellent game.
