Yeah! This is awesome. I knew they would do it, but I am happier now that it has finally happened. :)
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news/ap/20010210/ap-yankees-jeter.html
Jeter gets a $16 million signing bonus payable over eight years, $11 million this season, $13 million in 2002, $14 million in 2003, $17 million in 2004, $18 million in 2005, $19 million in 2006, $20 million in each of the following three seasons and $21 million in 2010.
I think he took a fair contract and was reasonable and didn't try to milk it to the fullest. He wants to be a Yankee - you gotta love that! :D (At least Lauri will agree with me :))

Jeter's not worth that kind of money. Of course, I don't think anyone is, but in the way the market's established, Jeter definately isn't.

In my opinion: of course he is worth that money. In my opinion, he is the best Shortstop in the game as well as one of the best players. He is well worth the money, not only because of his ability, but also because of the leadership qualities which he possesses. He also has not gotten in any off the field trouble.
Just my opinion. :)

You know that $189 million dollars is alot of pennies, but to tell you the truth he is not worth that much, and thats the bottum line !

I think if A-Rod is worth $25 million a year... then Jeter is definatley worth it.

The only thing with that is ARod isn't worth 25 million a year. Jeter therefore doesn't deserve that big of a contract either.

Steinbrenner could have had him at $118 million last year instead of waiting till this off-season and now he has to pony up $189 million. George must be thinking to himself now, 71 million extra dollars *DOH*. :)

No athlete is worth A-Rod-type money, or even Jeter-type money.
But if we assumed that they ARE worth that money, then Jeter got a good deal, and anyone who says Jeter isn't one of the best players, or perhaps THE best player (well, the best shortstop, at least), just remember that in 2000, he was the first player to be both the All-Star MVP and World Series MVP in the same year.

I think if Michael Jordan was playing, you could make a case that he is worth that money. :)

Hopefully if Jordan was playing Basketball you mean. :) And in baseketball he'd be worth much more, as you know salaries are higher in the NBA for the marquee guys like a Jordan. Of course, Jordan is the best player to ever touch a ball, so he should be and should have been paid the most. :D

I am glad Mr. Steinbrenner didn't sign him. The Yankees, we don't do the record breaking contracts. Everyone can complain, but who are giving huge contracts, record breaking contracts? For the most part, not us.

Sorry -- this is a little off-topic, but, really, I don't think any athelete is worth more than $1 million -- if that much at all. The media and sport organizations have gotten everyone believing that athletes ARE worth that much money. What do (athletes and pro sports) they contribute to society? Entertainment, I guess, but that's about it. I guess you could say the same for movie stars. It's just weird how people get such a thrill out of athletes. I guess I'm one of them -- I'm not denying that, but it makes you think. Why do people pay so much money to give other people millions and millions and millions and MILLIONS of dollars?
Anyways, I'm off to eat lunch and then watch the PGA tour... some lucky golfer will be getting a big $630,000 at the Buick Invitational. Yeah, I just bad-mouthed pro sports and multi-million-dollar atheletes, but I still love it! :D

Jeter in my mind is not worth that much. Neither is Rodriguez or any other athlete for that matter. There should be no reason entertainers and athletes get millions of dollars when people around the world are in poverty and are starving to death.

But, how many people are there in the world that can do what Jeter does on the baseball field or A-Rod? How many Jim Carreys are there? I suppose everyone can act like Tom Hanks if they tried? This is why these people are paid so much, because there are not many people like them.

Yes, but everyone of us is unqiue. Then we should all get paid millions for what we do best.

Nice but is Jeter really a Joe Dimaggio? That might be an exageration.

Well, its a bit early to tell. But, in my opinion, yes he will be just as great as Joltin' Joe.
