The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nominees for the 2001, 73rd Annual Academy Awards this morning.
The few "big" categories are as follows:
Best Actress in a Leading Role:
Joan Allen -- THE CONTENDER
Juliette Binoche -- CHOCOLAT
Ellen Burstyn -- REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
Laura Linney -- YOU CAN COUNT ON ME
Julia Roberts -- ERIN BROCKOVICH
Best Actor in a Leading Role:
Javier Bardem -- BEFORE NIGHT FALLS
Russell Crowe -- GLADIATOR
Tom Hanks -- CAST AWAY
Ed Harris -- POLLOCK
Geoffrey Rush -- QUILLS
Best Picture
CHOCOLAT
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON
ERIN BROCKOVICH
GLADIATOR
TRAFFIC
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon leads the way, nominated for ten awards this year.
For some reason (...maybe that reason is that I have to drive 40-50 minutes to the nearest theatre) I never see very many movies, but I always like watching the Academy Awards. Watching the Oscars has been my favorite thing to do to kick off my school's Spring Break for about five or six years now, and this year I can't wait!!!
I'm hoping Hanks will win Best Actor, but he probably doesn't have a good chance... the "experts" on CNN today were predicting either him or Crowe to win. Nevertheless, it should be a good and exciting show. Hopefully the ballots aren't lost this year!!
