Torre has brief meeting with owner

Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. – Joe Torre mentioned his desire to manage the Yankees beyond 2001 when he met briefly Thursday with owner George Steinbrenner.

Steinbrenner and Torre talked for just under 10-minutes in the manager's office. Torre will get $3 million this season in the final year of his contract.

"He came in here today and just said, 'When things quiet down, we'll go out and have some lunch,"' Torre said.

Torre said there is no timetable for talks on an extension. The Yankees have won four World Series titles and reached the postseason in all five seasons Torre has managed the team.

Steinbrenner did not stop for questions after meeting with Torre, but did say he "was excited about the start of spring training."

I would certainly like to see him back one more year after this, he's a great manager and a class guy.

BTW... sorry for all the Yankee discussion, but things are happening with them! :D

I'd like to see him back too. He is a very good manager and is great for the job.

It's ok that there's so much Yankee stuff on this board. It gives me more opportunities to show everyone how much I hate them (The team, not the players).

If he wants to come back, I don't see why not. I heard he was definitely coming back, and I think he would have opted out if he wasn't going to by now.
