So who do you guys think Chris Webber will sign with once his contract with the Kings is up this Summer? I believe he'll be the biggest free agent available after the season. He's in kind of a unique situation in the sense that for a lot of players in their free agent year they turn it up a notch so they can look even more appealing on the free agent market but Webber doesn't have to do that. Because even if he has a sub-par or even poor year with the Kings this season, it won't matter because everyone knows how good he is and he'll still get his big payday.
Webber's been waiting for this for a long time. He's been waiting to be in control of his own career, to call his own shots. When he was in Golden State, he had a run-in with Don Nelson which kind of damaged his image and then his image was further tarnished in Washington when him and Juwan Howard were accused of sexual assault (charges that were later dropped) which led to him being traded to Sacramento. Well now, after all that he finally gets to decide where he goes and how much he gets. It'll be interesting to see what he does.
Personally, I think he'll go to the Knicks. That's where one of his best buddies in the whole league is, Latrell Sprewell. And with the Eastern Conference, how many really good inside players are there. And what Webber's said all along a lot lately, is the most important thing to him is to win a Championship and with how much weaker the Eastern Conference is compared to the West it's probably a lot easier path to get to the Finals from the East than the West. Now can anybody in the East beat any of the top teams in the West in the Finals (ie. Lakers, Trailblazers, Spurs)? I'm not sure.
While I'm not a Kings' fan, I live close to the Sacramento area and the Kings' fans have suffered for so long they deserve the best team possible so I hope that Chris at least considers staying here, not because of the city but because this team isn't that bad. Jason Williams is maturing. And from I've seen of Predrag Stojakovic (their starting small forward), I think he'll be a future All-Star in a few years. Stojakovic is Dirk Nowitski without as much height and without the floor game. Stojakovic is so good right now moving without the ball, cutting to the basket and hitting the outside shot, he can score in flurries. By trading for Doug Christie and inserting him into the starting lineup, the Kings finally have a 2-guard who can defend and slow down other explosive scoring guards.
And the Kings also are the perfect team for C-Webb in the sense that they're a running team so they can showcase all of his skills and he can be the number one scorer with enough good pieces around him to still win.
While I don't think the Kings are Championship material now, I think they can grow into Championship material the next few years. Even if you're in the Eastern Conference you're going to have to go through the Western Conference champion anyways to get your ring so Sacramento is as good a place as any to start.
And I hope Chris takes that into consideration when he makes his mind up (if he hasn't done that already) this next Summer.
