View Full Version : Woods: I've Had Better Years
Woods hasn't won any tournaments lately in 2001. Is this year going to be a bad year for him? (Well, for him, nothing but 1st is acceptable.) Is he going to go in a "recession" after completely dominating 2000 much like everyone says the American economy is moving into? Golf fans think of Woods as superhuman and don't expect anything less than a victory.
Another point to ponder: is Woods' struggles thus far a GOOD thing for golf? If you think about it, if he wins EVERY tourament in blow-away fashion, it doesn't exactly get you pumped up for competition.

Well, for ANY golfer, or any pro athlete who is playing sports for a living, anything lower than first is not acceptable.... but really, it's only February!... there's still 10 months left and LOTS of golf to be played. Sure, in 2000 Woods won the first tourney of the year (or one of the first, anyway), but this is a different year and whole new ball game. You can't expect players/teams to keep coming back as strong as they did the year before, like the Yankees.
Tiger didn't win every tournament last year by a big margin -- just the two Open championships (US & British)... hey may have won a few other blowouts, but those were the major ones were "EVERYONE" is watching.
Wait... he'll be good. I'll reopen the discussion in this thread in December when he has had yet another superb year!

Well, first of all, Woods didn't COMPLETELY DOMINATE anything. He won a good amount of tournaments and had one of the best years of any golfer ever. But, no one will ever completely dominate. He did dominate at times though and was the best player in the game.
Also, I think its a bit too early to tell on him, like Lee said, its only February. I also think its too early to tell on the stock market. I just bought shares of Oracle today at 21! :)

iFroggy, where did you buy them from? I wanted to buy some shares in Cisco @ $26 but signing up for eTrade is a ugh, well that language isn't allowed on this board.
Anyway, keep your eye open, Tiger's ready to pounce :). But I'm waiting for the hidden dragon to appear! I'd like to see some very good competition throughout the year and especially in the majors.

And if anyone's interested, I recently wrote an article about Tiger's 'slump'. http://esportssection.ifroggy.com/articles/patrickokeefe1.php

You know what I find disappointing. Golfers, amateurs or professionals, put Tiger on this *imaginery* pedestal, where he is something so great. When they defeat him, they feel like they really have accomplished something and some of them really do make some nasty remarks and then there are the others who are lost in despair.
I read your article and I thought that comment was very unprofessional..and really does make no sense (the one by Bjorn). The guy seems to be harbouring some animosity.

I don't know about you guys, but watching Tiger not win every week is a great thing. He might have won at Bay Hill, but I hope this *not winning* thing continues, because the competition level is at an all-time high. Golfers are more confident, and are battling it out weekly for the win.
