Did anyone see Mike Weir's chip shot from the first or second cut of the green on Saturday? It was a great shot -- he chipped, rolled, and sank the ball.
However, he used a FIVE WOOD!... a five wood. Kinda weird, I though. Did anyone see that shot!?... Why would one use a five wood from the fringe!?... it worked out for him, he sank it and got birdie, but I still can't believe he used a five wood. Anyone have any insight on this or reasoning as to why he would use that club instead of a pitching or sand wedge or something????

sure you would use a five wood when you want to get good roll and a little bit of height on the ball. Its better then chipping or pitching. It's normally used out of the rough close to the green error but I've seen it used on the fringe before. It's actually pretty common, Im surprised you've not seen it before :).

Yeah, keeping the ball low by using a wood on a chip shot can prevent it from bouncing and/or checking up and can help it to roll more true.

It's common?... Rrreeeaaallllyyyy... well, I've never seen it before, but then again, I usually only watch golf in three situations: 1) Any of the majors; 2) the Canadian Open; 3) When Mike Weir is in contention (like today).
FYI, Weir used his 5 wood again today form the fringe... it didn't sink, though... he wasn't getting any lucky bounces today and ended up finishing second.

Well, let me say it this way: its pretty common among pros. You don't see it a whole lot because you will only see it when it is called for, ie: that lie and green. So you don't see it very much.
