Being 16, I'm sure a lot of you here can relate to the financial situation I'm in... that is, there's not much of it around! :)
That's why I'm asking if it's possible to get a quality club SET in the $200 to $400 range.
Any brands come to mind, or maybe something that might be in there that I can check out? I'm excited about this golf season, but I really think new clubs would help, as I bought my current set second-hand, and I just want my "own" set... (anyone heard of "Acer"? I didn't think so, but yet, that is the name of my set of golf clubs)

I've asked, and as for a brand: Wilson/Spalding was the only one I could come up with for that price range.
Also, if thats your budget, I recommend going to a club or whatever, seeing the club you want and ask them if you can demo it, regardless of the brand, if you like it, and it fits your budget, buy it.

I've heard of "Acer" the computer company :)...not golf clubs though. I've played Spalding's before...and to be honest with you..they were pretty good. I now use Blackcat Tour Irons and they really don't do much more for my game...I mean once you can hit the ball it's a matter of finding the club which you feel gives you the best accuracy and distance which is why I moved from Spalding to Blackcat.

Lee,
Also being 16, I totally relate. That's why when I bought my new clubs last summer, I got just what I wanted.
I payed $300 for Tommy Armour 845's that are a great bargain at their low price. The salesman agreed that they are the best priced and a great bargain.
I recommend looking into those.

Don't believe salesman. Believe me. :)
However, I can agree that the 845s are a quality set of irons.

Nice deal... only problem is, is that that's $300 US -- $450 CDN or so... I think I'll look into the Spaldings, though.... we're going to "they city" (I'm a country boy! :) ) on Spring break on Tuesday, so I'll be sure to stop in a golf shop and have a looksie at some of the brands mentioned here... thanks guys!!

Actually, he was right on the money- Using them for whole summer last summer, I was very pleased with them. They are great irons, as you said.

First of all, thank you to everyone for their help!
I didn't, however, get any of the brands mentioned here. No one really had any Wilson... The stores I went to didn't have Spalding either because they're going through a "rebuilding process" or something, so they don't carry any of their stock right now because they're changing it all.... also......

In the end, I got an 11-piece set of Pro Select for around $280... basically, that's all I needed... I had a really cheap set before just to see if I would like the game, and now I have a set of clubs of my own that I can probably have for a few years.

Lee,
Like I said, the most important thing was that you try the clubs out and see if you like the feel of them, they can be $5 at a yard sale (;)), if you like the feel of them, then you should be happy.
Did you get a chance to demo these clubs before buying?

has any salesman ever TOLD which set you liked better after trying them??? He did for me!... it was cool... before I demoed them, he put duct tape on the club head... then I shot some balls around into the cage... when I was done, he looked at a club from each set and told me which one he thought I liked better... how?... how close together the ball marks are on the duct tape!... it was pretty cool that he predicted the right one!!!
Anyways, yes, I tried a few sets out, and felt real comfortable with the Pro Selects...

Check out Integra or Toski or Player. These are all excellent clubs for that price range. In fact Integra makes the world long drive champs club.

...I took my new clubs out to my large (remember, I live on a farm) backyard yesterday.. practised my chipping... I feel REAL good with the set!!!
..then I took out the driver... I drove it straight about 170 yards!!!!!.... it was the first time I had EVER, EVER felt comfortable with my driver... however, I took out a long iron and it wasn't "working".... that felt better with my old set... oh well -- practice will make perfect... after all, it was only the 2nd or 3rd time I shot a golf ball since October!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for the snow to melt on the course so I can get started!!! :) ...every time I drive by it on the highway, I can see the snow on 12 and 17... the only other hole you can see from the highway is 13, and its pretty much cleared of snow.. probably still wet, though.... :(
