Wow, I didn't think the Patriots would do it, but they did.

BOSTON (AP) -- Drew Bledsoe signed a 10-year, $103 million contract extension that should keep him in New England until he retires while giving the Patriots salary cap room.

The 29-year-old quarterback was scheduled to make $7.6 million this season, but the contract would have counted for $9.8 million under the salary cap.

Bledsoe was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL early in his career, throwing an NFL record 691 pass attempts for 400 completions and 4,555 yards in 1994, his second season. In 1995, he was the youngest quarterback to reach 10,000 yards.

He signed a seven-year, $42 million contract in 1995 and led the Patriots to the 1997 Super Bowl. Last season he threw for 3,291 yards with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as the Patriots stumbled to a 5-11 record.

I, myself, really don't like Bledsoe and I don't think he's that great, or even worth the contract. Just my opinion. :)

I think Bledsoe is all hype and no wins. He is overrated. He started off good in his career (remember his dual with Favre in the 1996 Super Bowl), but he has completely sucked the last two-three years. $102 million makes me sick.

Now, now, now, Marc. Do not read between the lines.

Bledsoe sucked the past two years because his O-Line sucked, giving him absolutely no time to throw. Furthermore, his receivers weren't the greatest. After Terry Glenn, we have nobody. Troy Brown is a great 3rd Receiever, not 2nd.

Put Bledsoe behind a line like Denver's, or even in Green Bay, and put Favre behind our's, and Favre would be dubbed "horrible," and Bledsoe would be the next Marino. Bledsoe IS the next Marino, though. He's got a hell of an arm- the strongest since Marino.

He'll be just fine if we can rebuild properly.

I'm still convinced he's overrated, much like Jake Plummer is/was. How do you explain him throwing so many INT's?

If I'm not mistaken: Brett Favre got his contract and then it was the highest in the game, then Bledsoe got his and it was the highest.

My opinion:

Favre should be paid much more then Bledsoe, he has played just as good if not better and lets not forget he won a Super Bowl and collected 3 MVPs, he deserves to be paid a great deal of money just because of past performance. Bledsoe should not be in the same league contract wise.

Bledsoe has certainly never lived up to his considerable hype, although he's been stuck on some subpar teams.

In college, a standout player can carry a weak team. Doesn't work in the pros. Everything has to be at least solid before a team can succeed--great talent in one area or another can't overcoming huge, glaring weaknesses. Just look at Barry Sanders in Detroit for the proof! Put Barry behind the line Emmitt Smith had in Dallas--we all know what would have happened. Sanders would have completely re-written the NFL rushing records and won five rings.
