View Full Version : Post counts in The Lounge
While I value The Lounge's success and popularity here, we have to keep in mind these boards are first and foremost for sports, with off-topic discussion coming second. Because of this, I have decided it would be in the best interest overall to make posts in The Lounge not count toward user post counts. So, if you notice your post count doesn't go up when you post there and only there, this is why.

While I do not agree with this decision, I'll respect it.
I believe that this will cause some people to post less, and I myself will even question if posting in "The Lounge" actually means anything at all.
Furthermore, if your 'logic' is going to be respected, shouldn't post counts in Suggestions and Feedback, Staff Forum, and FNHL be all off?
(Ironic how this is my 1000th post)

Patrick,
The purpose is to motivate people to post more in the other boards, and use The Lounge to relax when they're done there. Please keep in mind that post counts are nice, they aren't anything but a number and shouldn't cause someone to or not to post. I don't want post counts to be the only reason people post.

I agree that it should only be looked at as a number.
But, with it not counting at post count, it would assume the initial reaction would be that a post in "The Lounge" is not worth as much as a post in the Sports forum.

...I think that's the idea -- what Marc's trying to get at.
Yes, Lee is 100% correct.

ok , so, whats the difference , do post counts mean anything? do posters get monitary benifits from posting?i thought the meaning was to have people with simuler interests , post there opinions on the boards to share in the discussion of a sport we all , obviousely love. not to say "i have 1000 posts , you have 100 , my opinion means more"i must be missing a piece of the puzzle!!!
speaking of posts ,, i wish i had a cool leafs logo to put on my posts like sc's, but alas, i know not how to get one, hint , hint, hint .

No, they don't mean anything.

Post counts do not really mean anything, and of course posters do NOT get paid to post here. They come for the fun of it, to relax and talk sports. A person with 1000 posts vs. a person with 100 posts does not make one better than the other.
Regarding avatars (small images under your user name), you can probably find them on any sports site like ESPN.com, Sportsline.com, etc. on their team pages. Once you find one, you may have to make sure it is the right size, but instructions on how to upload one are at: http://sports-central.org/community/boards/announcement.php?s=&forumid=12

I, as the moderator for The Lounge, do not like this decision. Being the moderator, the majority of my posts are from The Lounge- as I do begin many threads and continue them. This would lessen my "appearence" on the boards...

If the majority of your posts are in The Lounge, then the only thing will change is a number beneath your name, nothing else. If you or anybody else wants to become a top ten poster, you'll have to get involved more in the other sports boards. That's the ultimate goal. We have one board with 2000+ posts and others with only 200. Let's even things out a little. It's unfair for people to be boosting their post count enormously by posting often in like the Word Association thread. I have nothing against these threads, but it's boosting people's post counts too much. Let's post in threads that actually take some thought and remember: quality over quanity of posts! :)
You could always get rid of post counts all together ;)

Well, I believe that Post Counts give certain users an incentive to posting, although they don't mean anything, they might be proud to be in the Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, etc.

All I can add to this is simply to post because you want to post, but because of a little number.
That number will not:
*Give you prizes or money
*Give you special priviledges
*Give you extra respect from other users
It is just a number!

I agree with this decision ... I post at another sports board where there is a very popular politics forum. You'd be amazed by the number of people that will go to a sports board to argue politics! I know of at least four users there with 90% of their posts in that forum.
If this is a sports board first and foremost, then sports needs to be the #1 priority. You don't want to have jokes and movie reviews count the same as baseball or football, do you??

No you don't. People were getting distracted.

Gee, I go to message boards in general to relax after work sometimes. So with this thinking, none of my posts would count. :D
If you are going to count posts, and you have a forum open for discussion, I think that the posts should count. If your not going to count posts in one forum, dont count them in any forum.
Just my opinion.

I agree with mojo. And i would just like to add that this move has not really affected the other boards popularity, and the Lounge has gone way, way, down. It was a nice try, but I believe this experiment backfired.

Well, I wouldn't say it backfired. But, it was a good try and I would as just as much liked to keep counts in the Lounge. But, again, it doesn't really matter. If it did have counts in the Lounge, I'd be leading even more. lol :D

Well, thats not really the point. I believe that this move has decreased the boards popularity and usage.

Remember its a sports board. People were not concentrating on the threads on sports and many people posted on off topic threads.

i think this is a stupid thread, who gives a rats patuty how many posts they have? talk about sports and throw your weight around in a discusion , if you get your but kicked , well its all about opinion now isn't it? not post counts
this is a discusion , a way to connect to others who have the time and intrest to voice there opinion to others around the world ( or at least in north america) get real and stop whinning about post counts.

Some people feel that the higher their post counts, the more they have contributed to the site.

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO???????????????
Can yo guys hear me or what. I have NEVER said i was concerned about post counts. That is NEVER the reason why i wanted it changed. I want it changed cause some people are ticked because not giving them credit for their contributions makes it seem like Marc and the fellas at SC are unappreciative. Just look at the Lounge now. There hasnt been a decent discussion in there in quite some time.
As I said, get more people to sign the petition (http://sports-central.org/community/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1108) and I'll do it.
