I read this, this morning on the CTV SportsNet news ticker, but it was early and my eyes were only half open and I was only skimming the news ticker, and this is what I read: "AZ P Randy Johnson killed a...."

I was like, "what!?... Randy Johnson died!??... or committed murder!?"... so I thought it must have been a mistake and had to wait for five more minutes or something for the headline to re-appear on the ticker, and it turned out that "AZ P Randy Johnson killed a dove while pitching in yesterdays 10-5 win."

I really don't think it is funny. Killings birds with fastballs does not make me laugh. It is just some freak accident that occurs when a ball just doesn't go exactly where it was supposed to.

I think Dave Winfield killed one several years ago.

In 1983, Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield killed a seagull in Toronto with a warmup throw. Police charged him with animal cruelty, although the charge was later dropped.


If it is proven intentional then someone should be charged. But, obviously this was just a freak thing.

Did anybody actually happen to see the footage of that? You can see the bird flying then poof, a big explosion of feathers. The bird died instantly, which was good, but I don't know if I would have gone as far as Jeff Kent and pick the bird up and point jokingly toward Johnson. Johnson obviously took exception to it too.

If you ever do get a chance, find some film of that moment, its shocking seeing the white flash coming from the right then the poof of feathers about 40 ft from the mound. I'm pretty sure that Kent did do that though, if I remember correctly from http://espn.go.com/
