I was originally going to post this in the hockey forum, then basketball, but I finally decided that here was the best place for this post!

...should NHL players be allowed to participate in the Olympics? If I'm correct, aren't only amateur athletes allowed to be in the Olympics?... If I have this story correct, one of Canada's best figure skaters, Elvis Stojko, is not going to turn professional because if he does, he can no longer particpate in the Olympics... and didn't Tara Lipinski turn professional, and now she can't particpate in the 2002 Olympics in SLC?... (someone interrupt me if I have my stories wrong!!)

..so why should NHL and NBA players be allowed to particpate in the Olympics!?... I mean, what was wrong with the quality of play in 1994 between Sweden and Canada in the shootout in Lillehammer, Norway (besides the fact that Canada lost! :( )... The answer to that question is NOTHING: it was just as exciting to watch... plus it allowed the young players like Peter Forsberg to experience big-game pressure situations on a global scale for the only time, except for the World Junior Championships -- but the Olympics is bigger and means more.

What does everyone else think???

Well, I didn't really follow your post. But I think there are different cases in different parts of the Olympics. For basketball, it's America's pro players against other country's best - this isn't the case for other competitions, but as long as it's pro vs. pro or amateur vs. amateur, I'm okay with that.
