Default McGwire Admits Using Steroids

Here is a story: Mark McGwire comes clean, admits steroids use - ESPN
I'm glad to see him coming out voluntarily.

Well, semi-voluntarily. No surprise here. Are Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa next? They should be. What's interesting is McGwire still maintains the steroids did not make him hit more home runs ... they just improved his "health" so he could withstand the rigors of a 162-game season. BS? I think so.

I think he truly believes that they only helped him withstand the rigors of the long season. I agree that that is BS, though.

Is it really voluntary? Would we have heard from him if he had not taken the job with the Cards? The only reason he did this was so he would not have to keep ducking and dodging reporters at spring training and during the season.

We're fighting two wars abroad and, for all intents and purposes, a civil war at home (see the Tea Party phenomenon, etc.), half a million people just got vaporized in Haiti - and we insist on re-hashing this?

This whole crusade makes me sick. Then again, it always has.

I don't entirely disagree, and I would love to see news organizations focus on important international issues rather than overblown stories like this.

That said, this is a sports message board, and there's a lot of sports media out there. The PED debate is one of the most important sports discussions of this era, and McGwire's role is a pivotal one.

Have certain players and angles been blown far out of proportion? Undoubtedly. Is this a legitimate story that merits coverage by sports media? Yes. I don't think ESPN has any place covering the war in Afghanistan, the earthquake in Haiti, or the genocide in Sri Lanka.

I really, really don't want to get into this, but you have a really unusual standard for what constitutes civil war.

Exactly and sports media are the only places I have seen that are giving this a lot of run. It made the mainstream news for a day or so but they have not covered the "fallout" from it the way ESPN has.

But since the myth that "pitchers wouldn't juice" - which I myself fell for at the time - has been debunked, it really doesn't make any difference, now does it?

Except, of course, to the usual self-righteous moral busybodies, who in a previous era were labeled the "booboisie" by H.L. Mencken.
