I love Steve Kerr as a basketball player and thought he had one of the highest B-ball IQ's around. But his constant harping on how todays players are revolutionary compared to the past is bordering on idiotic. This article gives a good rebuttal
http://hoopshype.com/columns/history_hans.htm even though I disagree with a couple of things. I feel Duncan and KG can be favorably compared to the all-time greats, Dirk is no where near the player Bird was and I suggest that he never will be. People spend so much time looking for the "next" MJ, Bird, Magic or whoever that they become foolish in their comparisons.

This is interesting. I do think today's players are different than in the Magic/Bird days in that they can do more things, jump higher, shoot more, etc. -- those are what may give them an advantage over the past. But they also lack many of the fundamentals like the mid-range game, defense, basketball IQ, etc. It's hard to say, really; it's all figurative.

Rasheed Wallace: 13 ppg. 7.5 rebs per game.
Lamar Odom: 14.5 ppg. 10 rebs per game. WOW, what inovaters. What raw, intimidating talent. Steve Kerr is obviously VERY easily impressed. I'm suprised Kerr didn't learn more about greatness....who was that pretty decent player he played with? Michael.....um??? Bird vs. Dirk? That's not even worthy of a response.

I was sick to my stomach as I watched the Cavs and Pistons last week to listen to Kerr compare Lebron to MJ............while he was in the midst of going 4 for 20. I love Lebron's game but he has a loooooooooooong way to go to be compared to MJ.

But then again, pick any random announcer and he probably has his 'favorites', just like any fan.... I will agree that it's just about the strongest praise you can give, to compare a player to Michael... but then again, Steve DID play with Michael for some time and probably recognized some quality(s) that may not have been reflected in the 4 for 20 shooting. |

Kerr's just saying what any ex-player would say to stay in or near the game. You'll be yesterdays news & a footnote if you're not "promoting" the game as it is today regardless how silly some of the "promotions" get....
