I wonder why he got banned. It wouldn't be because he posted stupid stuff like this... could it?

Sounds like a good enough reason to me! I guess if you don't have anything relevant to say, you risk being banned.

Noon 12-24-2004 01:25 PM

If that's the case, I should have been banned a long time ago.

Noon's ratio of useful posts to pointless: 1 to 8.

KevinBeane 12-24-2004 02:01 PM

Noon, we just keep you around because of your avatar. We're too lazy to look up Maxim-level porn ourselves.

C'mon, people, what do you think, we're that bad? Of almost 2,000 members, only a handful have been banned. In this case, this user was banned because he was excessively posting garbage and generally being a troll, repeatedly, and was majorly disrupting things. We're not going to ban anyone for a few silly posts, but when it's hundreds of useful drivel posts, it is another story.

I'm trying to maintain a mature, civil, and intelligent community. It's hard to do that when you get 13-year-olds spouting off junk in large amounts. I'm not saying we don't like young posters, we just don't like disruptive, immature people who don't positively contribute. Alex and Ellis are two users who are younger, but mature and contribute.

I just wanted to make this clear -- we're not a bunch of miliaristic nazis, just trying to keep this community above the junk you find on so many others.

Don't sweat it, Marc...:)

It's obvious to most there's no heavy handed, hob nailed booting going on at SC. Don't give it a second thought....

Signed,

SCs 2004 Frivolous Poster Of The Year :)

Ellis 12-26-2004 03:24 AM

I feel bad that he got banned because the kid ment good things, but he just made crap posts and wanted to be the center of attention. I'm not sorry for him. When you post stupid things, like this thread, 100 times in a month, you had it(the ban) coming to you.

MaddEnemy 12-26-2004 12:17 PM

I have looked around and have not found to many Threads started by Cubfan13.

He must of just be active in Threads other people started.?

I think I contribute more than I garbage around here "as I reach up a to feel my neck".

I do have a question for all of you.

Does anyone care about or would not like to see some of the free stuff I have posted?

Free Sirus Radio
Free Stuff Max
Free Hot Dog?

Just trying to hook you guys up with free stuff that is legit and can use. I try to add them in to a thread at least sort of has something to do with the topic.

If no one cares I will quit.

Marc 12-26-2004 03:04 PM

Madd: I would quit with the free offers. I know you're probably just trying to help us out, but it seems kind of sleazy along the lines of late-night infomercials. :)

I hope this doesn't offend you but I have to offer some response from "an outsider"(poster, not management). Personally I never get so involved that I will go so far as questioning the banning of a member but I would also point out that I would never seek out the facts on a banning.

The only reason I would offer rebuttal is cuz I brought this thread back up, not to force response from management for the banning but as a humorous (at least in my distorted view...lol) take on what goes on in running a site.

I wasn't active when this happened but I would offer the point that as silly as I might seem at times to some, that I always offer some relevant points (once again, in my distorted view...lol) to some discussions (at least in my eyes) that I've never been concerned with being banned. If I was banned, I would take that as a point that my involvement wasn't suited to this site, not that I wasn't "worthy".

So in closing please take my view as singular in nature & put it where it belongs....food for thought or trash can material....:D

p.s. I've liked the fact that you've come onto SC & have been a staple for instigating discussion on numerous topics & for that I thank you.....

Cubsfan just posted to post. Some people do that. They get some sort of satisfaction from seeing as many posts from themselves as possible. They think there is some sort of competition for post count, or that having a lot of posts is meaningful in some way. It's not. It clutters up the site. And that's why Marc took away the post count view.

Madd, I appreciate that you want to "liven things up" around here, but that's no one's job. You can't "force the funk." We should all feel comfortable enough that, if we have nothing to say...don't say it. Cubsfan got to be too much. Here's the post that put Marc over the top (His exact words: "You know what? F**k this." and then he was banned). It's not at all offensive or rule-breaking but it is 100% pointless, which was typical of him.

Last word before this thread is closed: the banning of users is not a public issue, and if you want to know why someone is banned, contact the person yourself. Threads started with the intent of undermining our administrative decisions will be removed, and if another poster continues to make it an issue, he or she will be banned, as well. I am not going to tolerate the drama and arguments that have ensued in the past over the banning of users. What is done is done and will never be reversed. Posting messages on behalf of a banned user, which has also been done, will not be tolerated and will result in banning of the person posting on behalf of the banned person.

Despite all of this, banning is still a last resort measure and it is not something we like to do. However, stricter rules have to be put into place because the time and effort wasted in the past defending our decision to ban someone is not acceptable. Those types of decisions are private and will be private in the future.

Because we want to keep this community "above the fray" and keep it mature, professional, and intelligent, we have to enforce rules against useless drivel. In fact, if you look at the Community Guidelines, we have a specific references to this issue:
Quote:

Furthermore, do not post provocative, outrageous, or pointless messages only to get a response from others, i.e. "trolling." Repeat violators will be permanently banned.
and
Quote:

If you have a problem or a complaint, direct it to the administrators and/or moderators, not to the boards. They will then take the appropriate actions. We reserve the right to ban flagrant offenders when deemed necessary, with or without prior warning.
With that said, thanks for your understanding and happy holidays. :)
