Cool Anthony's Week 1 Picks

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

THURSDAY NIGHT

NEW ORLEANS 27, Minnesota 24 (+4 1/2) - The Vikings flat-out should have won January's NFC title game - and in fact they did cover, extending their streak of doing that in this series to five games; and while defending Super Bowl champs are 6-0 straight up in these now-apparently-traditional Thursday night home openers, they were handed their first-ever non-cover therein a year ago when Pittsburgh spotted Tennessee five and won by three. Take the points.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS
23, Carolina 13 (+7) - An apparent "overlay," in that both teams finished 8-8 a year ago - but Eli Manning vs. Matt Moore is one of the biggest first-string QB mismatches possible in an NFL game right now. Until John Fox inserts Jimmy Clausen under center, I'll be picking against the Panthers with near-monotonous regularity.

NEW ENGLAND 21, Cincinnati 17 (+6) - It's been two dozen years since the Bengals last came out of Foxboro with a W and they've lost their last two vs. the Pats by 21 and 25, both at home; but Tom Brady's unfinished financial business cannot help but serve as a distraction so take the points here.

BUFFALO 16 (+3), Miami 13 - Assuming Clausen does become Carolina's starter at some point in the season, Buffalo has the worst starting quarterbacking in the league bar none - but I'm not exactly sold on what Miami has at that spot either and the Dolphins are 6-16 straight up on artificial turf since 2004 and have lost five straight in New York State by a combined 130-58 (remember that Miami's 16-3 "road" victory over the Bills two years ago was at Toronto); upset special.

Atlanta 20, PITTSBURGH 0 (+2 1/2) - True, the Falcons are winless lifetime in Pittsburgh, but they keep getting closer with each visit, losing by 25 in 1984, 12 in 1990, four in 1999, and their 2002 game there ended in a tie. The Steelers should have signed Matt Leinart when Arizona released him.

Denver 21 (+1 1/2), JACKSONVILLE 14 - Two bad teams but the Jaguars are really awful. And the home team has lost the last three meetings.

TAMPA BAY 17, Cleveland 10 (+1 1/2) - Somebody has to get off a serious opening-day schneid in this affair, with the Bucs having dropped their last four "Kickoff Weekend" games (the NFL's official term for Week 1) by a combined 58 points and Cleveland going one worse, losing five in a row by a total of 78. And it looks as if Josh Freeman will answer the opening bell after all despite a hairline fracture of his right thumb.

TENNESSEE 20, Oakland 16 (+7) - I've never been a big fan of "The Carryover Theory" (the Titans won eight of their last ten in 2009 following an 0-6 start) and over the past four years the Raiders are 15-7 against the spread on the road on natural grass, compared with 1-9 on artificial turf. Definitely taking.

CHICAGO 27, Detroit 14 (+6 1/2) - Point: The Lions snapped their NFL-record 24-game road losing streak with a 20-16 win at Soldier Field in the 2004 opener. Counterpoint: They needed four Chicago turnovers and a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown to do it. If the Bears are smarter with the ball this time around, they not only win - and thereby extend Detroit's current drought away from home to 21 - but also cover.

HOUSTON 31 (+3), Indianapolis 27 - Yes, the Colts are 15-1 in the all-time series, but the times they are a-changin' - and remember that Super Bowl losers have non-covered on opening day the following season ten consecutive times.

PHILADELPHIA 30 (+3), Green Bay 23 - It doesn't matter that the Packers figure to finish first in their division this year (even with Brett Favre still in Minnesota) while the Eagles figure to finish last in theirs. Green Bay will never win in Philly: Since last winning there all the way back in 1962, they've lost nine straight, most of them under indescribably bizarre circumstances that space limitations rule out my even getting into in these lines. And not for nothing, but why are the Eagles home underdogs when these two teams had the same record in 2009?

Arizona 28, ST. LOUIS 14 (+3 1/2) - Yes, I've heard that joke about Derek Anderson: That they should send him to Iran - because he could overthrow Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But the Rams have dropped seven in a row to the Cards by 120 points and can tie the NFL record home losing streak (the Cowboys lost their last 14 home games of the '80s) with a loss here. Don't bet against it.

San Francisco 20, SEATTLE 13 (+1 1/2) - So, Mike Singletary wants the 49ers to go out and hit people in the mouth. But they better not hit Matt Hasselbeck too hard this early, or it will give their NFC West rivals the inside track at landing favorite son Jake Locker in the 2011 draft - assuming there even is one.

Dallas 21, WASHINGTON 10 (+3 1/2) - This will be Donovan McNabb's third crack at the Dallas defense in as many games, as McNabb faced it (as an Eagle) in both last year's regular-season finale and then a wild-card playoff game. The combined score of that doubleheader was Cowboys 58, McNabbs 14 - and expect Mike Shanahan to make good on his threat to bench Albert Haynesworth.

MONDAY NIGHT

Baltimore
20 (+3), N.Y. JETS 7 - Even Darrelle Revis won't be able to bring it full tilt after missing the entire preseason due to a contract dispute - and there is no disputing that Baltimore owns the Jets, beating them five straight times. Next year the Ravens may very well be opening up their season on Thursday night at home instead of Monday night on the road.

San Diego 27, KANSAS CITY 23 (+5 1/2) - Last year the Chargers began the season with a Monday night road game at the Raiders, who they had beaten eleven in a row going in. San Diego won that night, but didn't cover. They take only a five-game win streak over the Chiefs into this one.

BEST BETS: ATLANTA, PHILADELPHIA, BALTIMORE
