Default Dallas Clark = Jinx Victim

If there is anyone out there who still denies the existence of the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx, one would think that their dwindling ranks will be further depleted by the news that the defending Super Bowl runner-up Colts have just lost tight end Dallas Clark for the season with a wrist injury - hardly the likely number-one answer to a Family Feud-style question "Name an injury likely to put an NFL player out for the season."

Not only that, but Colts wide receiver Austin Collie is out indefinitely as the result of thumb surgery.

The jinx lives on - does it ever.

Not at all, the Colts are still in contention and the injuries of two NFL players is hardly compelling proof that there is a jinx.

But not a single Super Bowl loser in the last 17 years reaching the conference championship game the following season is "hardly compelling proof" that there is a jinx?

Or the fact that more than half of them didn't even make the playoffs the season after?

maybe its just the way of the world, I doubt there is a jinx, maybe teams just need to prove their worth. I am sure you could find stats like that for any team in any sport.

In point of fact I don't chalk it up to a true "jinx" - but rather to the sick, warped culture we inhabit, which teaches that second place is actually more dishonorable than last, since it means that you "choked."

But in the next two weeks the Colts host a team they've never lost to at home, then play a team they have beaten by a combined 100 points the last four times they've played them - and that's the most lopsided result of the four most recent meetings in any of the NFL's 496 head-to-head matchups.

So I guess we'll see where they go from here.

how do you explain the Saints rash of injuries and horrendous play from Drew Brees?

is that a "jinx?" or is it just the nature of the NFL. Teams must adapt and overcome.

A separate "jinx" applies to teams that win the NFC South: Since the division was born in the 2002 realignment, no NFC South winner has ever finished first or second in the division the following year, or made the playoffs the following year! By stark contrast, every single team that has finished last in the division one year has made the playoffs the season after, all but one by winning the division.

And did I mention that over a six-year period - 2001-06 - teams that finished with the worst overall record the year before had a better combined record (42-54) than the previous seasons' Super Bowl losers (40-56)?

This is because the NFL is impossible to predict and in most cases, the team that gets breaks injury and officiating wise one season DOES NOT get those breaks the next.

The game of Football is like poker in that both games require a heavy amount of both SKILL and LUCK

Football - and sports in general in this day and age - also resemble poker in another way: If you have the second best hand, you will end up, at least in the public eye anyway, as a much bigger loser than if you had the worst hand.

I disagree completely, in poker if you have the 2nd best hand, and you play it right you win the pot anyways.

Everyone loves an underdog story. No matter who wins the world series, the public will view both teams as a success.

If the Browns even made it to 8 - 8 this season would be a success.

You just have to play to your abilities. If your ability is a super bowl victory and you lose in the super bowl, sure the season is a dissppointment, but you are not a lsoer

Isn't Brees on the cover of Madden this year?

Yes he is but Brees lack of success and production this year is explained by many other factors, not being on the cover of madden.

While I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, welcome to Tea Party America - where might makes right, only the strong survive, and underdogs are, quite literally, regarded as subversive.

And to make another point that I ask everyone's indulgence in not reading pure politics into: Winning a conference championship does as much these days as winning the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008 did for John McCain.

Personally, I abhor this way of thinking - yet nonetheless recognize that this is the way things are, and in fact, have been for a long time: Remember Nike's "You Don't Win Silver, You Lose Gold" ads at the 1996 Summer Olympics? Phil Knight would never have approved those ads if he felt that they wouldn't be effective from a marketing standpoint - and if anything, we've gone even further in that direction since then.
