Default The NFL's safety crisis

With science showing the horrible long-term effects of repeated hits to the head, the NFL is cracking down on them. The dilemma is the league has promoted and glorified big hits for decades, and now it is trying to change its tune overnight. With the recent fines and news, players across the league are very upset.

James Harrison contemplated retiring: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...=ESPNHeadlines

Brian Urlacher says it's becoming flag football: http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/10/20/b...-a-bunch-of-b/

Here's the fundamental problem: the mindset of defensive players is they want to crush people, but the NFL is essentially saying to take it easy. Do these scary health effects and concussions mean the sport is in danger?!

Joe Paterno says we could go back to one bar on the helmet to discourage unnecessarily gruesome hits: http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/joe-pa...o-insane-29141 He has some points...

Josh Cribbs Defends James Harrison's Hits

Josh Cribbs says James Harrison didnt do anything wrong and he has tackled the smae way before.

Its the NFL by any means neccessary you need to knock the guy down.

Do you agree with Cribbs? I don't player safety is VERY important.

Ironically, I didn't think either of Harrison's hits were that bad. Dunta Robinson's was much worse - and not only because of who was on the receiving end, no pun intended, of his shot.

But with the 18-game schedule looming boldly on the horizon, it would be nice if something constructive could be done in this matter - if only to shut up what the generation immediately ahead of mine liked to refer to as The Peanut Gallery:

I didn't see Harrison's hits, but the fact that he knocked out two players on two plays one after another and than said "its my job to hurt people."

Thats ummmm, discouraging to say the least.

The thing with Harrison's hits is I don't believe either one of them were flagged.

What I don't get about this whole thing is the league says it wants to clean up the hits where guys are going to the head and using their helmets, and yet all I hear about how the league is trying to take the big hits out of the game.

I don't see where the league is telling players they can't knock the crap out of guys they are simply telling players they can't go to the head or use their helmets to do so.

I heard some folks in the media say Robinson's hit was just a good clean hit, yet I always thought it was against the rules to hit a guy with the crown of your helmet regardless of where it is which is what Robinson did. He may not have hit DeSean Jackson in the head but he did plant the top of his helmet in Jackson's chest which I thought was supposed to be illegal.

It knocked both players out too, I'm pretty sure that hit was VERY illegal.

If the receiver is off his feet as Jackson was, he is clearly defenseless, by any objective definition.

Robinson should have been suspended for as long as Jackson remains out - and that would include Week 8, when the Eagles have a bye (which should be the rule when a bye is involved).

I disagree, severely illegal hits like the one on Jackson should have a simple system.

1st Offense - Fine
2nd Offense - 1 game Suspension
3rd Offense - 3 Game Suspension
4th Offense - 5 Game Suspension
5th Offense - 10 Game Suspension
6th Offense - Season Long Suspension

Anything after 6 is ridiculous and should result in multiple seasons or even a ban from the league.

Perhaps the enhanced focus on this is having an impact. Noticeably fewer vicious hits last week. I don't see anything wrong with be stricter on certain types of dangerous hits that can clearly be made without putting someone at risk for injury. You can tackle someone without knocking them out, etc.
