Cool Anthony's Week 11 Picks

1

Last week: 7-6-1. Season totals: 64-77-3, Pct .455. Best Bets: 14-15-1, Pct. .483.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS
27, Baltimore 17 (+6 1/2) - Despite their surprising 6-3 record the Ravens have a lot to prove, in that the six teams they've beaten are 17-37 among them, and their injury-ravaged secondary looms no match for Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.

CAROLINA 35, Detroit 7 (+14) - The 0-16 watch has begun in earnest in Detroit - and it has very real chances of happening when you consider that the Lions' seven remaining opponents are a combined 40-23, and not one of them is currently worse than 4-5. Panthers will be more focused at home after last week's semi-scare in Oakland.

ATLANTA 31, Denver 24 (+4 1/2) - It sure took the linemakers long enough to show the Falcons the respect they deserve. Matt Ryan has yet to have a home game with a passer rating of lower than 115, while the Broncos have yet to cover on the carpet in 2007-08 (0-5), and have lost their last four inside NFL domes by a total of 88 points.

MIAMI 16, Oakland 10 (+11) - The Dolphins have neither the proven talent nor the consistency to be trusted to cover big numbers, and if there's one thing the Raiders are actually good at, it's running the ball right up the middle - and they should be able to do that more than well enough against Miami's 3-4 to keep this one close.

TAMPA BAY 27, Minnesota 13 (+4) - I feel sorry for anyone who bet on the Vikings last week: They became the first one-point favorite to win an NFL game and only push against the spread since November 16, 1994, when Atlanta spotted San Diego one at home and won 10-9. But they look even sorrier this week, paying a call on a venue at which they've dropped five straight both ways, the last three by 69 points.

Philadelphia 21, CINCINNATI 17 (+9 1/2) - The Eagles are 0-10 against the spread vs. the Bengals in franchise history - and it's lucky for them that Carson Palmer is still out; otherwise, Cincy would win the game outright.

INDIANAPOLIS 56, Houston 10 (+9) - The Texans have been outscored by 116 points en route to their 0-6 lifetime record at Indy, and by 276 points in their active 16-game losing streak on artificial turf. This could be the biggest blowout in the NFL in recent memory.

Chicago 20 (+4), GREEN BAY 17 - Who would have ever thought that an opening line on a game would be delayed because Kyle Orton was questionable? And Green Bay's ability to handle the Bears of late is more than questionable: 1-5 in the last six meetings (both outright and pointwise), and also four straight losses (and non-covers) to Chicago at Lambeau.

KANSAS CITY 25 (+4 1/2), New Orleans 24 - It comes as no surprise that Kurt Warner has been the top fantasy producer among quarterbacks the last three weeks, but would you believe that Tyler Thigpen ranks second? And this week, Thigpen will have Larry Johnson to dish the rock off to for the first time, and New Orleans isn't showing a whole lot of guts right now and is 4-9 straight up since 1997 as a visitor in cold weather. Herm Edwards makes the two-point conversion this time around - and even if he doesn't, the Chiefs still cover.

SEATTLE 27 (+3), Arizona 23 - Well, you saw them Monday night. Do the Cardinals really scare you? And the Seahawks, who have beaten them five straight times at home, get both Matt Hasselbeck and Deion Branch back this week. Upset special.

SAN FRANCISCO 17, St. Louis 16 (+6) - The 49ers aren't good enough to blow anybody away - not even the Rams outdoors, where St. Louis is 27-53-2 against the line since settling into their domed digs exactly 13 years ago this week.

PITTSBURGH 27, San Diego 20 (+3 1/2) - Six days after winning in Washington for the first time since 1964, the Steelers turned around and lost to the Colts at home for the first time since 1968. The Chargers are 0-12 lifetime in Pittsburgh in the regular season, and have been thumped 345-162 in those dozen debacles. These things can't possibly go wrong three weeks in a row involving the same team, can they?

Tennessee 16, JACKSONVILLE 6 (+3) - Don't know why they bothered moving this game into the late time slot, when the Pittsburgh game being carried by the same network promises to be both more competitive and more exciting. Look for the Titans to revert to business as usual facing a defense that allowed super-bust Cedric Benson to rush for 104 yards two weeks ago.

WASHINGTON 23 (+1 1/2), Dallas 7 - Tony Romo won't be anywhere near fully healthy, and the Redskins are 6-1 versus the points in their last seven against the Cowboys, who are 7-23 straight up in cold-weather games since 1995 - and this one's at night.

MONDAY NIGHT

BUFFALO 27, Cleveland 24 (+4 1/2) - Maybe they knew that Brady Quinn was going to take half the season to secure the starting quarterback job in Cleveland? This will be Quinn's second prime-timer in as many pro starts, and he'll have a third at Philadelphia on Monday night in Week 15. With neither team showing much at the moment, you might as well take the points on Quinn going head-to-head vs. Trent Edwards.

BEST BETS: CAROLINA, INDIANAPOLIS, WASHINGTON
